It's a disease. You cannot see diseases - nor can one shoot it.

Sure, its a bit of a worry - but the government cannot protect you from a disease. If so... I think the government is derelict in its duty to protect my daughter from cancer.

Get a grip. The government is not a baby sitter, nor your mommy. They have restricted incoming travel from affected areas... this is good enough. One may slip through a crack from time to time... that is just a fact of life.

Oh brother... such an unintelligent post.

If we're going to make this into a conservative/liberal thing, I predict that if ebola spreads in America, the conservatives will have a fit when the government, in order to contain the spread, restricts our travel between cities/states. "Security and safety isn't worth loss of freedom!", they will say. The conservatives would rather ebola spread than to be told they can't move freely within the U.S.

And this is a correct position. The government is not here to protect me from the common cold, they don't run behind me and tell me how to wash my hands after I use the bathroom - they aren't here to protect us from getting sick! Governments run the government.

In fact, they CAN'T prevent illness! So guess what... I might get cancer someday, and the government won't be able to stop this from happening, neither can they protect me from getting any other contagious/communicable disease or virus such as the common cold or ebola!

In cases like that... I must do everything I can to protect myself, and know enough that if I get sick, or get exposed to something contagious, that I need to stay away from others in order they won't catch it!

And what about those people who aren't responsible enough to stay put when they have ebola? What about those people who might have it, but don't know yet, who won't stay put? So, you would rather ebola spread and kill 80 percent of America than to stop irresponsible people from spreading it. Way to go conservatives - you'll be the end of America if ebola takes hold.

No... idiots will be the death of most Americans. And THAT will be so no matter WHAT!

This country is about freedom. It is based on it. Freedom is why we are all here. Freedom.

I will not have my freedoms trampled on because you are afraid to get sick! Stop living in fear. Your going to die one way or the other...

if you want all your freedoms gone - go to prison. Don't be too worried about me joining you though. I don't think I would like prison so much!

Ha - well you are probably right about that.

My beef is not with you. My beef is with Grandma who says that we will all die of ebola because of the progressive liberals. I think my argument that we will all die of ebola because of conservatives is just as sound, if not more sound than hers is.

Oh and by the way, I'm not afraid of getting ebola - at least not yet. And I'm one of the responsible people who WOULD stay put if I was sick with it, or even was exposed to it - unlike the Liberian guy who flew to Texas.

Actually, President Obama is the one who refused to restrict air travel from countries with Ebola to the US. He said it won't get to the US. He was wrong!

I'm telling you that since the majority of infected are black that it will become a racism issue to restrict people from infected countries from coming into the US. The only ones so concerned with racism that they will put millions of lives at risk are the liberals and progressives. When in reality 7 years ago racism was disappearing. I lived in the deep south then and racism wasn't an overriding issue and I worked at that time with convicts. Things have changed, Obama was right on that one.

Everyone will scream to high heaven if quarantine is enacted, they always do, liberals will too. But I agree that quarantine may be necessary. No need to get snippy with me on that one.

The only ones so concerned with "Freedom" that they will put millions of lives at risk are the conservatives. It's already happening with "no more gun control" and "don't monitor us to catch terrorists".

Ok, let's watch and see what happens and who will be right.

If it comes to screening people based on race at airports, I say it will not be done due to our racism obsessed administration. Until there is screening based on country of origin, or a ban on flights or people from those countries entering the US until the crisis is over, I am right.

If it comes to quarantine, if no liberals/progressives/Democrats are upset or try and get out of the quarantine or the rich Dems do escape quarantine, or raise their voices in complaint about it then you are right.

I'm already right, because we have a conservative right here on this thread who has told me she would rather risk catching ebola than have her freedom to travel in the U.S. curtailed by the government. I am a liberal who would rather have my freedom to travel curtailed temporarily than to risk the spread of ebola to me and my family.

the 'doctor without borders' that came home to Atlanta a couple of weeks ago was cured, remember?
so it is survivable if treated on time

It would be poetic justice if it spread to the government.i mean they should have grounded all flights from Africa and all connecting flights from there.

Africa should be quarantined.nothing good comes out of there except death and disease.

Horrible place with dictatorships and brutality and no order. All the aid money we give goes into swiss bank accounts or to buy guns.

did you know that africa has more guns than people?

why don't you people study blood electrification, colloidal silver, ozone bagging as treatments against ebola?
vast amount of information on the net.

I hope children dont come down with ebola. One, its always sad to see a child sick and two, children are the little outbreak monkies of the world. They come in contact with each other, dont have good hygiene and tend to spread illnesses to their friends and households.

What I am saying is I'm not willing to go through a bunch of check points in order to go on a vacation with my family. (checkpoints are unconstitutional) I am also not willing to see everyone in Texas loose their freedom to travel for business in LA, for instance, because 1 person there is found to be ill with Ebola.

I am not willing to loose our freedom to be Americans, inside America, just because a few might be ill somewhere.

I thought they were already restricting travel INTO the united states from countries that have a high prevalence of the disease - which I see as a much different story. I am perfectly happy to close our borders.

I read an article not too long ago stating that some parents from affected countries were going to be missing out on seeing their children who are in college here graduate etc. (Which I have no problem with) What happened there? Why are we no longer restricting entry into the US?

I do not feel safe in trusting the CDC to contain this.

I do not feel safe knowing they couldn't keep it from entering our country from across an entire ocean. Am I to trust they can now stop it from crossing the street?

I also do not feel relaxed at the fact that its just "one" person as people keep saying. Its one person we were warned could eventually come to infect America. Well its verified now that it has happened. In under a handful of weeks this has happened.

How many more are on the way? How many more will this man infect?

I'm not a doom-porn lover, but I do not feel "at ease" with this news as so many "cool headed folks" seem to be.

Don't panic...of course don't panic. But don't be lulled to sleep by the people who brush off every scary report because they think its hip and smart to call every approaching scare as "doom porn".

a reply to: OpinionatedB You are not free in america if people walk around with a virus they do not know they have. Rave on about how well you take care of yourself but at the end of the day you will not infect yourself. Your infection will come from someone that could have been stopped.

All flights in and out of west african countries could stop, economic reasons or not. Its not that hard. The government grounded ALL flights right after 9/11 so its not impossible.

Read my point again.
They could stop all flights in and out, but that would then mean stopping all flights from any other country accepting flights from these nations too, right?
You can stop all flights from African nations, but what about Europe? Russia? Asia?
Yes! Lets stop ALL FLIGHTS in or out of anywhere, end the airlines, put hundreds of thousands of people out of a job because you don't know the difference between Hollywood Sci-Fi and reality! lol

If they have to quarantine people who are coming in and out of west african countries for a couple weeks then so be it. Again, its not that hard. They quarantined almost the entire Japanese population during WW2 for fear of them being spies. Also, I believe that if you are traveling to certain countries you should know the consequences of your actions like if you travel to west africa you have a chance of contacting ebola or being abducted if you go to the middle east or certain parts of central/south america.

Right, so now we're setting up internment camps in the USA? Yeah, that's sounds like a great idea considering the massive legal ramifications (that you, the tax payer, will have to deal with). Lets waste billions of $'s in an already struggling economy to set up massive open prisons. Great idea!

Also, I dont consider it fear mongering when a disease makes you bleed out of orifices that you never thought you would bleed out of. And there is NO cure for it as of yet. Its really not that treatable. The treatment is to drink/iv fluids as much as possible and cross your fingers right now...thats it. Well, besides the experimental drug that was taken by the dr. who went over to west africa and dosed himself as a last ditch effort. But even that isnt totally proven yet. Also with it being so spread out in west africa it has a great potential for mutation. I just rather take caution and this just gives me another reason not to go to texas.

Wrong on almost every count.
The Ebola virus IS treatable, and they are working on a vaccine that seems to actually be working very well. As stated (and as you completely ignored) African nations have far less infrastructure, far fewer medical staff, far less training and far less money to deal with this outbreak over a massive area, the same DOES NOT APPLY to the US.

Your post is a great example of the extremes people will go to when they are ignorant about something. You are not going to die because a person has arrived in the US with Ebola. They will be quarantined, treated, and then released (probably 100% successfully just as others have).

You are being completely irrational, based on what I can only describe as sensationalist notions of a virus you clearly know little about.

Instead of demanding the end of all air travel and the imprisonment of thousands of completely innocent people, why not go and read up about the Ebola virus, the standards of care in African nations, and the very small likelihood of a manageable outbreak in the USA?
