Teachers in Brazil who fined a transgender student for wearing a skirt have been forced to back down after her classmates 'both male and female turned up to school wearing skirts to show their support.

Maria Muniz, 17, who was born Mario Muniz, said she had never felt happy as a boy and decided to come out by wearing a skirt to school.
But her difficult decision failed to find support among teachers at the Pedro II School, in Rio de Janeiro, who fined her and ordered her to wear trousers in future.
But the teachers were forced to backtrack when the pupil's classmates - including the boys - supported her decision by turning up for classes in dresses.
They then posted the images on social media where they quickly ended up being widely shared.
Maria said: "I always turned up in trousers but I felt repressed and for me wearing a skirt was about expressing my freedom over who I am inside and not how society sees me.
"I am really happy about the way my classmates supported me and I hope it serves as an example to others to feel encouraged to do the right thing. I was always taught at school to accept who you are, I am only trying to live that."

The school principal now says that they are considering relaxing the school rules regarding this.

way to go kids! this story made me smile, nice to see that kid getting support from classmates, the younger generation can really teach the older folk a thing or two these days.

A lesson of equality and acceptance from the youth?

Absurd I say!

Maybe they can do a speaking tour of the UN.

Peace

It really is refreshing to see a story like this. I'm a middle aged bunny (early 30s)... I guess technically that makes me a rabbit... And I see/hear so many stories and accusations about these younger generations being disenchanted, disconnected, and desensitized so I'm glad to see even a small group of them stand up for something/someone they believe in. Regardless of your personal opinion on transgender persons, these kids deserve a standing ovation. KUDOS KIDDOS!

Kids seem to stand up much more these days than adults...maybe they will have to be the ones to make the changes we hope for...

No they won't. You see they only stand up for issues the media deems to be important.

I don't see my generation ever standing up against tyrannical governments, unfair taxation, unsustainable debt, etc.

They only stand up for what is deemed appropriate.

As a Brazilian and a trans man, I remember getting very emotional when I first saw this on Facebook.

However, in the past two weeks, we've had a "big" case of a gay young man who was brutally killed... and also a trans woman. So there's hope, but things are still pretty bad.

Some of you might take this the wrong way but....

Brazil has so many other issues to deal with, like their staunch racial caste system, that this seems like a drop in the bucket compared to the racism that is still abound there.

That's an arse load of sexy men right there... Yep.

And nope... Not a damn bit of sarcasm in it.

I'm glad to see this. It seems like we always see stories of bullying going on in schools, this is far from that and a huge breath of fresh air.

Me neither.

If one has a thing for Scotsmen in skirts dresses kilts, then one should be able to express her 'meow' factor about it.

School is about education not sexuality. Frankly, I think both actions were stupid - the fine AND the skirts.

Students will do anything to waste time.

Hmm. I should buy a kilt apparently.

Good for the kids. Certainly more mature than I was at that age. Shoot, more mature than I was 10 years their senior.
