The people elected the officials who represent them, are taxed to pay the salaries of the men involved in said collusion, elected the man to sit in that seat, and then he was killed---by the very men whose salaries are paid by that taxation.

It's because JFK involved more than one group. It took high level members of both major parties, sitting senators, the FBI, the CIA, and the mafia. Literally everyone in power wanted JFK gone, he had a very long list of enemies and the next 6 presidents (Johnson through HW) were all involved in either the assassination or cover up. Ultimately you're going to wind up with a situation where one can reasonably say there were simply too many well connected powerful people to keep a person safe and it's going to be true. Throw in the fact that it happened 50 years ago and it's just not something that's going to shake faith in the current government.
