Volcano experts declare 'red alert' after Iceland's Bardarbunga erupts overnight, prompting immediate flights ban echoing 2010 ash cloud disaster

Scientists in Iceland have issued a 'red alert' after the country's largest volcano erupted last night, prompting an immediate ban on all flights over the area.

A small eruption occurred north of Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano after nearly two weeks of earthquakes in the region but no volcanic ash has yet been detected.

Nevertheless, authorities took the unusual step of closing the airspace above the volcano in a move that echoed the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull ash cloud disaster which brought European air travel to a standstill for six days.

The eruption took place in an area not covered by glacier. Hopefully, that's all she's got.

Hopefully not, I like it when the planet gives humans a slap in the face.

I wonder if you'd still feel the same if it were you or your loved ones getting slapped?

It's being toned down already.... they don't think it's going to explode like the last time because it doesn't appear to be hitting the ice sheet (which would cause the explosion).

Here's a link to several Bardabunga webcams including a real time camera showing steam (I think) rising at the moment.

And a youtube live stream.

Well according to the site linked which is a 3d seismic graphical representation, there was a 4.8 magnitude quake about an hour ago away from the general line of quakes (longitude)

Perhaps someone might be able to assess the significance if any, of that quake
