Oh Star Trek will be real alright!

I just think we may end up as the soulless transhuman technology-obsessed Borg instead of the peace-loving Federation.

Yea, more like that for sure. However, a scenario like "Demolition Man" starring Sly Stalone and Westly Snipes, seems likely as well, occurring right before the Soylent Green scenario happens.
