So this new movie "The Purge" suggests a yearly free for all when normal laws are suspended for one night. This one night of mayhem is ostensibly orchestrated to help citizens express and act out on negative emotions and repressed urges.

I would like to suggest another Forum here on ATS. A Purge forum. One day a month and in one forum only of suspension of the rules whereby members can feel free to insult, slur, demean, slander, ridicule and castigate one another. Maybe some of the vitriol that spills over from the fountain of deep angst so prevalent around here can be funneled off into a culvert such as this.

Unfortunately though, this kind of action already exists. There are members here who, over the years, have developed an ability to "skirt" the spirit of open discussion and freely insult, slur etc. other members on a regular basis. As in the movie "Ridicule" they hide behind a set set of rules from which they spew their disdain of those with a less refined manner of contemptuous expression.

I say open it up. Let one night a month be a night of frolicking, vitriolic mayhem. I have several targets in mind already, couldn't you tell?

Um, no. I doubt this would benefit anyone for any reason.

I like the idea , i've seen the 1st movie, wasn't bad, hopefully the second goes deeper into the madness.
If we could purge all the politics and all the zonists that would be fantastic, heaven on earth i say !

I'd make boody traps all over their places to catch these rats (lol)

there's a reason why we shouldn't just blurb out anything that comes to mind
or just do anything that comes to mind

don't you agree?

allowing this "once" per year/month/whatever isn't going to work

restraint.. it ain't such a bad thing really, especially when one recognizes the value in it

have you ever tried to put toothpaste back in the tube? thats what it will be like after we're finished tearing each other apart. few relationships can survive perfect honesty, especially if it involves a glorious roast in the fashion of those witty clowns on MTV. except without the funny.

excellent point Unit. Restraint is a very valuable skill and I can only concur that it's use important in any adult endeavor.

I think however, that sometimes, a dam of restraint could use a little spillway in order to relieve the pressures of pent up emotions.

I feel those that would need this type of outlet should instead relocate to a war torn area so they can develop a new perspective on life.(referring to the premise of the movie)

Right you are Tzar. I practice this philosophy in everyday life. Couching true feelings and opinions with family and friends so as not to violate the bond of trust developed over years of interaction is essential to adult behavior.

However, here, on ATS, where the group seems to be polarized by smarmy opinions on either side of so many issues, I suppose that what already exists as non-relationships could not be harmed at all.

Good idea! I certainly wouldn't want them in my neighborhood.

isn't it sad to realize you can be honest only because there's no relationship at stake? cold, cold, cold...

I agree and disagree. I think any logical assumption should be allowed in any forum. No matter if they word it as "you" when they mean "them" or not. Cursing, name calling and ridicule should be allowed. As long as they arnt spamming or some other action that complicates people's ability to converse. This is the internet! No one should really care what other interneter's think about them. Y'all arnt married or even friends. So they're opinion of you or me is irrelevant.

I think the code of conduct is used far more to censor people who have differing views. The admins, for the most part are random unpaid ATS users. So you can bet they're political and social view points are on display in there administrations.

Hypothetically, you might notice that your constantly warned or edited when discussing abortion or Obama by some one with the user name "don't tread on me". You can assume that's random chance if you want to.....

Quite, Quiet. By moving to a war torn area, the small strife of verbal jousting here on ATS would be seem moot in comparison.

And, thank, you, for that perspective. I am eased.

This film is idiotic at best. It preys on primal thinking and actions. How's about we just do away with 90% of all laws and just keep the ones that really matter. Like don't kill, steal, etc....you know the natural laws. All the rest are pointless and don't solve any problems anyway... They just create more problems.

"Out of chaos, comes order." - Nietzche

I did a thread once that asked if we have a societal collapse do you have plans to seek revenge on anyone?
The discussion lasted two pages before it was 404'd.
The responses woke me up a bit.
It seems many of you have it out for someone, and if you had no restriction, would gladly do something about it.

The real problem with a yearly purge is when someone comes for you and your family.

Most likely I will not see the move myself. The super imposed suggestions in a context of mass population control and manipulation through suggestive movies such as this actually scares the livin stuff out of me.

When I first heard of this movie I was reminded of an old novel by Ernest Callenbach titled Ecotopia. In it, a secessionist movement of liberal hippies in Northern California, Oregon and Washington, seceded from the union and established another nation on the west coast. In it, they developed the same concept. I think it was one week of wild acting out. When I read it I found it very disturbing.
