I think Carmack spread himself too thin, he has his fingers in so many pies. The man was a genius, just wish he'd stick solely to gaming.

I have high hopes for two reasons , ID is now owned by Bethesda who in my opinion release quality games and the new Doom was ready a couple of years ago but they scrapped it and started again because it wasn't good enough , my hopes are high.
Oh and John Carmack isn't there any more , I think he lost his way as shown by the very disappointing Rage.
Executive producer Marty Stratton introduced the demo, explaining that the reason the new shooter is called Doom rather than Doom 4 is because “it’s an origin game, reimagining everything about the originals”. In other words, a reboot. The story kicks off outside a research facility on the surface of Mars, but the demo also included a cave system
Whatever it is that has changed, some things remain the same, and one of those is enemies: players will face down demons of various kinds, from smaller types that attack in groups to huge foes that require plenty of bullets to defeat.

Is it really 10 years since Doom 3? Wow, I keep that loaded on a computer to play and The Dark Mod (Thief style port).
Can't wait for the latest version of Doom!

From what I've read ID promised attendees of QuakeCon an exclusive look at the game , we will get to see the demo after that.
I wouldn't discount it just because of that
