As I said earlier I did not studied all the thread but from you remarks I see that rebels expected An-26 at that time and location. Also they were probably aware of fact that there can be any number of commercial airplanes heading any direction possible - at such and such altitude. So my speculative question is: Where they got that intel about An-26?
Yes mistake is still possible. My conspiratorial soul asks me if somebody did not help to do such mistake (this idea is not mine, still one of possibilities).

Still thank you very much for your insight.

If you watch the video from Iraq of the DHL Airbus that was hit by a MANPADS, the entire time it's on camera, there isn't a single smoke trail, even though the outer portion of the wing was on fire. It would all depend on what was burning, if anything, as to whether there is a smoke trail or not.

He said "at least one American."

They could be waiting to release the other names after their families have been notified.

You have to take into account that the footage was recorded a good 3 hours later, chances are that's more than enough time for the smoke trail to dilute or completely dissipate in the atmosphere!!!

It's a pretty simple thing to have spotters watching airfields to see when planes take off. That was one of the things that was done in Somalia when the Rangers went into the city. They simply put kids with cell phones to watch for helicopters flying out of the base, and call someone with an alert.

He was refering to the footage of the impact itself, so not 3 hours later.

So the flight was apparently 200km North of it's usual flight path, asked to fly at a lower altitude & was being tracked by Ukrainian Air Force...

This is a confusing incident!

The twitter account of the Spanish Air-Traffic controller has been closed. He certainly had some interesting insights, and apparently a little bit of history with the Ukrainian government. I doubt the truth behind the account will ever come out to be honest.

Mysterious Spanish Air-Traffic Controller

One of the strangest stories to emerge from the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight from Amsterdam that was downed in Eastern Ukraine involves a purported Spanish air traffic controller working in Kiev and known only by his blog name—Carlos—and Twitter handle, @spainbuca.

As soon as the plane went down, Carlos started tweeting about how it was shot down by the “Kiev authorities, trying to make it look it might be an attack by pro-Russian forces.”

OK, that is at least semi plausible explanation. Until we know further details we can not decide what happened. Separatists mistake remain one of viable hypothesis. Once again thank you.

It's from a distance. I think the consensus is that it's real.

Ya don't blame ya. It's hard to keep up with threads like this due to their length. I'm sure it has been posted but it's ok to post multiple times to ensure it gets noticed. Things like this always makes you go hmmm.

Sofar I think the pro Russian seperatists shot it down thinking it was a militairy plane, but it was presented to them on a silver platter by another party.

It was planned to go through the area before it even took off. If you look at the replay of the flight, you can see the flightplan going through the area, but they were south of the planned route. They were above the restricted airspace limit of 31,000 feet, but lower than the 35,000 that was planned.

I really wish people would get a few simple facts straight.

1. The Ukrainian military possesses SEVERAL BUK missile systems. In fact the ONE system the rebels are reported to have was TAKEN from the Ukrainians.

BUK
2. The videos purportedly showing the Pro russians taking claim are highly suspicious to say the least

The video reportedly showing them taking claim.

Another video that appears to be made by the same people who made that video.....only from JUNE 5th go to 2:40 or so to see what i mean.

How is something that's highly suspicious a fact? The only fact you stated is that the Ukraine has BUK systems, along with a lot of other countries.

Where did you get the number 100 from? I read the entire article and it only discusses "the leading AIDS researcher"....as in a single person. Did you intend to post a different article?

I have not seen anything talking about 2 military aircraft in the area. what I have seen is 2 military aircraft have been shot down in the air in the preceding week.

yes, there has been talk that this plane was being escorted by two Ukrainian jets to the border. It's only rumor, but it has been reported. Look at earlier posts in this thread to find that information.

Something radar would have shown.

Not if the radar was not functional in the area as it has been stated from other sources. Like I said, we don't know all the facts, but you appear to have access to "facts" that I do not....allowing you to already form an opinion. I'd like to see those sources, please.

@ a seperate question - The missile system in question requires a radar unit for targeting. That radar would be with the missile unit to target the aircraft.

Secondly, you are once again confusing local radar for long distance flight control radar.

Is the BUK listed midway on the page the missile system in question?

en.academic.ru...

The SA-11 radar does not have to be with the launcher at all it can be miles away. the launcher does have a radar but its not needed to fire a missile. Some launchers do not have radars.
The problem is once set up to fire a missile it takes 5 to 10 minutes to move again and this makes it a fixed target for anti radar missiles.

Due to the way the system was built to counter the US Harm missile system they would use a number of radar units with a number of launchers.
Any radar unit could power up, lock on, and fire any launcher unit in less then a minute then the radar unit would make a run for to get away from any anti radar missile locked on to its position.

The SA-11 radar/ launcher units also have laser and IR tracking systems to track and launch on aircraft>
