Actually the ICBMs on both sides launch nukes that are designed to detonate in air, so although radiation levels will be high, dust particles being thrust into the upper atmosphere will be minimal. The whole nuclear winter thing isn't all it was made out to be. The end result will just be a highly irradiated warmed globe (assuming global warming is also all it is made out to be, and not just a scheme to intimidate people into higher taxes).
