MOSCOW/KIEV (Reuters) - Russia threatened Ukraine on Sunday with "irreversible consequences" after a man was killed by a shell fired across the border from Ukraine, describing the incident in warlike terms as aggression that must be met with a response.
Although both sides have reported cross-border shootings in the past, the incident appears to be the first time Moscow has reported fatalities on its side of the border in the three-month conflict which has killed hundreds of people in Ukraine.
Kiev called the accusation its forces had fired across the border "total nonsense" and suggested the attack could have been the work of rebels trying to provoke Moscow to intervene on their behalf. The rebels denied they were responsible.
Russia sent Ukraine a note of protest describing the incident as "an aggressive act by the Ukrainian side against sovereign Russian territory and the citizens of the Russian Federation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement warning of "irreversible consequences".
"This represents a qualitative escalation of the danger to our citizens, now even on our own territory. Of course this naturally cannot pass without a response," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told Rossiya-24 state TV.
Russia's Investigative Committee said a shell had landed in the yard of a house in a small town on the Russian side of the frontier, killing a man and wounding a woman. The Russian town is called Donetsk, sharing the name of the Ukrainian city of 1 million people that the rebels have declared capital of an independent "people's republic".

It will be interesting to see how this turns out, especially with what Russia has already done in Ukraine.
Just another attempt from Russia to validate why it has done what it did in Ukraine...IMO.
I am wondering what Russia is going to claim next.
it seems they are now desperately trying to create an incident that will justify a continued invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

What Russia "claims"? Really?
Continued invasion of Ukraine? When did that happen?
So far, Russia has shown a lot of restraint, preferring to bring it before the UN, which just seems to be getting ignored as more and more civilians are bombed and shelled by the proxy idiots in Kiev.
The crazies in Kiev will continue to poke away trying to get Russia to respond, which is the order from NATO (US), so that a heavy response can begin. That's why there are all those NATO assets around, moved in exactly for that scenario. So far, Russia refuses to play ball and isn't biting.
Maybe Russia should launch airstrikes and a ground invasion to protect it's borders. After all, if it's ok for Israel to do so........!

Want to specify the mass raping you mention? that was a minority and they were punished for their actions. it wasnt mass rape either. Also CHINA is the biggest taker of Iraqi oil. ALso BOTH SIDES KILLED INNOCENTS BUT THE US DID IT ACCIDENTALLY.
I can see (and tell you) that there was an invasion of crimea several months ago by Russia which lead to annexation of the area into Russian control.
When did that take place??? By invasion you mean the democratic election they had in Crimea?
invasion (ɪnˈveɪʒən)
n
1. (Military) the act of invading with armed forces
2. any encroachment or intrusion: an invasion of rats.
3. the onset or advent of something harmful, esp of a disease
