Personally, I was raised in a church and quit going once I was able to choose. I disliked the hatred spewed from the alter. I disliked the ignorance of the general population of the church. After leaving the "family" church (my great grandma and her mom went to it, and all through the generation went till I left and my mom got ill) I got with a christian girl, I got baptized at her church -- trying to be supportive, and I enjoyed that church actually; however, it felt incredibly fake. I'd see these people in public and they'd just about spit in your face and tell you to eff off if given the chance. I watched a guy kick his gay-son out and he became homeless, I watched people use the Lords name in vain, I watched them spew hatred and ignorance. I ended up leaving, my ex ended up on drugs, we split up, bluh bluh bluh. I said all that to say this: Christ, in every instance, in the bible, each time he went into a church he raised hell. He hated how poorly people acted, and how fake they were. I'm not a biblical scholar so I could be wrong, however; I do not believe Christ went to church much if any at all without tearing the place down. Christ hang out with the people church turned away, murders, hookers, etc. he showed them love and compassion. He said only through him can you make it to heaven. He died for our sins, thus even gays can go to heaven. I accept them. This relates to your post because not all christians go to church, many of us have been sickened as to what kind of political scene it has become and the general ignorance that is in those walls. People are even turned away at the doorstep. It's sickening.

Amen to that.

The judgement one receives at the hands of such persons is toxic to ones soul. Good for you for getting out of it. I am so sorry to hear the effect of these issues on your relationship, and your ex's drug problem. I hope that you have been able to move forward from that situation.

As an atheist, I have to say this: So what?

It's not about winning or losing, it's about living life and doing the right thing. Atheist, theist, agnostic: doesn't make a difference if that person is kind, compassionate and strives to make this earth a better place.

Check out the countries that have the biggest atheist populations.... Let me know there crime rates and how poverty stricken they are... Then tell me how America is a full of atheists..

You may be a Subgenius, but there is much wisdom in what you say. I wish I could say the same about the point of this thread. It's getting to where the Christians can't run for public office anymore, since the atheists have a stranglehold on politics. Also, the Christians are not allowed to teach our children anymore, since the atheists have taken over education, right? You might think that what I just said was sarcasm, but it is too preposterous to be sarcasm.

That's what we were all taught in school.

After I learned that history is one huge lie and education is nothing but blatant misinformation, I began to dig around online.

Right but then you have fundies and extreme Christians telling me I have NO morals because I did not get them through god. Then when I assure that I have plenty of moral ground they tell me it came through god and I just don't want to recognize it.

matt is correct. Morality, ethical AND unethical behavior has nothing to do with your spirituality or religion, it has everything to do with who you are as a person

Lots of believers don't go to church because they believe the 501c3 status of most churches in America is unbiblical. I couldn't say how many feel this way.

I used to listen to a lot of Dr. Scott Johnson, that's where I learned about 501c3.
