Race Roulette

Today I went to a doctors office. Never mind what it was for, I'm old. Things break and bend wrong at my age.

So I'm sitting there, filling out multiple forms and I happened to miss one section. Race. No big deal, right?

Well, they filled it out for me when I handed it all in to the receptionist.

When I signed for everything, I noticed that they put me down as Hispanic-mixed.

What the French?

Now I don't have any great issues about my skin color. My father is one color, my mother, another. But Hispanic? Meh. I let it go. I'm not one to quibble over such a minor issue.

I went to see the doc, got my exam, got my prescriptions (drugs!) set up all sorts of tests (I'm old, remember) and went on my way.

I told my wife about it, in passing, and she laughed!

"Tried to pass for a white man again, didn't you!"
(My bride is hilarious!)

So I go back to the topic of my rant, to parrot Hillary Clinton, "At this point, what difference does it make?" If there is no discrimination, no preferential treatment, then why in the hell do I even need to put down my race?

Why the need to even make a point of it? I'm happy just to be considered an "Other" and let it go.

But to categorise, to shoe-horn people in any category is just plain wrong.
Am I wrong?

And if I am, then ¿Por qué ?

I have wondered about that one myself. They don't even have check box for us Martians.

I prefer the term, "Fluffy-Alternative" thank you!

I don't like the whole box thing either. The last time a census person actually got me to the door she said white? I said no. She said what then? I said other. She said what other... I said all of the above. She wasn't having fun. I was having a bit. She left. I was happy.

I have an innate sense to buck "the system" in what small ways I can.

I despise "the box" we are all constantly trying to be put into.

Under race, I generally put "human" when I'm thinking about it.

But I had other things on my aged mind than checking a stupid box.

Red, actually. I have Native American blood on both sides of the family. I once had an African gal ask me why I was so red. I asked her why she was so black. For some reason she got angry.

Denny's (of all places) have always given me the most grief.

I'll order a skillet breakfast (with sausage) and the waitress will always whisper, "But it has pork in it".

I'd just smile and say that I'm not a muslim, then order a side of bacon on top of it!

I have always wondered what would happen if I claimed a minority race.
They don't ask for proof, so if I established myself as some minority, would I get preferential treatment? Free service? A discount?

I usually check

"Other ____________"

and leave the line blank.

I haven't gotten squat. But then again, I've never asked.

Maybe if someone started a football team called the "Grey Skins" the aliens would finally land to protest. That would be speciesism.

In my country, there is preferential treatment.

Free doctor, dental, hospital for particular races.

Even see job adds asking for specific races only!

I normally write in the box that say's Race. " I came in second and retired" I'm whiter than loaf bread, I see no need to shout it or write it down.
