What if it is found that the 'man made clouds' are warming the planet?

Aren't there scientists trying to combat global warming?

there are ways for planes to not make contrails, but it's both expensive and causes more pollution. Planes fly at the altitude they do for the best fuel efficiency possible. Sometimes, that altitude is the same one ripe for contrail formation, sometimes not. (amazingly enough, some days you have clouds, some days you don't, same with contrails)

So they could pick a different altitude to fly at, but would sacrifice fuel efficiency.

I think there are many scientists working on climate change, and ways to change the outcome. If it's found that it would be a net gain, to not have contrails, then I would think "they" would ask that a change be made. Contrails are a byproduct of flight, not a reason for it. (IMHO)
