Why Do You Watch Death, Dismemberment, & Decapitation?

I've seen quite a lot of this stuff purely by accident; I've never gone looking for it.

Executions in Saudi Arabia and mob slayings in Africa come to mind. Youtube most of it, but some was actually on British TV.

I saw one of the Iraq beheadings at work - a colleague had downloaded it onto their phone and then showed it me before I had a chance to react.

I managed about 15 seconds and freaked.

Still trying to forget it.

Thats no surprise coming from someone who pretends to be a rabbit in online forums.

I respect your position though, and i don't advise anyone who can't take it to subject themselves to it either.

I grew up on a horse farm too, maybe that desensitized me a bit. But the sight of blood doesn't bother me. Mine or someone else's.

People or animals in duress bothers me, Violence bothers me, but i feel like some one has to watch these things to put them in context for other people who don't understand why a husband would chop his wife's head off. Or a pretty girl would kill a kitten at the behest of sickos. I want to be aware of these things, so if i see it in real life i can recognize and do something about it and not be useless, paralyzed with shock or dumbfounded enough to allow it to continue.

I fully accept that we live in a messed up world. I do not sugar coat it or create fantasies of security. I take it as it is. Watching these things allows me to put into context how messed up things can get. And how fragile a human body really is. I wish everyone was kind to one another, but the truth is that people do horrible things to other people. If we pretend it doesn't happen and pretend that these people don't exist, then the victims of these atrocities will just increase with no opposition and it will continue behind closed doors.

If someone says they are burning witches in Africa, I'm glad someone got it on video and yes, i watched it. It let's me know exactly how dangerous ignorance can be and what ignorance begets.

If muslims are stoning people to death for their religious beliefs i want to see. Because it let's me know just what the human condition is capable of. These are humans, this is what humans do to each other in societies that are not set up well.

Oh Lord... The 911 videos gave me nightmares. All I could think of was how scared would you have to be to jump out of a window so high that you knew without a doubt you would not survive?? How excruciating were the flames on the other side, that that was the better choice? Then I thought of family members that may be sitting there watching their loved one make that impossible decision. That was absolutely horrific... without a doubt.

I was also raised pretty much the same as you. If you killed it, you ate it. You were taught to respect all life. Not just humans, but animals as well. The good news is, that I think more people feel like us and not the other way around. That's always good to know.

Thanks Beez. That's one of my all time favorites. If that doesn't make you feel better, not a whole lot will I don't think.

TO EVERYONE: Stars for all for helping me answer my question. I am glad to see that more folks are disgusted by these videos like me, but you have also helped me see that you don't have to be an absolute serial killer to watch. Before I asked that was pretty close to my assumptions.

There are some of you who admitted that you do watch, and I do really appreciate that honesty. I can understand the reasons given here as to why some of you do take a peek on occasion. In the end I am glad I finally asked, and I am glad ATS could help me out.

Simply because our society has always glorified such actions throughout recorded history.

Why do you think we have canine teeth and the ability to write good books? We are warrior poets at best, nothing more, nothing less.

That's a cop out if ever I heard one.
Human society is being slowly steeped in rotting fecal matter and brought to a boil.
As long as the environment (not nature) is one of constant fear and violence, we will see more answers like this one.
The longer people have their heads held under the surface of the reality projected by state-run & controlled media, the less they will crave real lasting change.
The constant bombardment has desentized the populace with ever increasing levels of mind-numbing violence so that now, directors like Rob Zombie are called "campy & tame".
All the people want is stimulation that matches what they are bathed in and what stimulates better than blood?
So we have videos of soldiers throwing puppies off of cliffs.
Clips of children being torn apart by helicopter gunships.
Women & children being raped and killed in public.
People burnt alive.
It's on 24/7.
There's no blocking it out.
And still it's not enough for some of you?
You crave more?
More graphic?
More grisly?
We are abused so badly as a species that the glorification of the ending of innocent life is merely regarded as entertaining? Not even? A Vine? A Meme?
Do want to be let in on a little secret?
Until people start unplugging from this Three Ring Circus of Pain...you'll never get enough of it.

No I would not glorify such actions, but I would be a lier if i said i would not witness such an atrocity media or otherwise oriented.

If CNN, NBC, BBC presented such a thing would you watch? Tell the truth, it will set you free even if it does not save your soul.

Plus it's rather hard to avoid the News these days don't you agree?
