Actually where the differences are and where the confusion arose is from our individual "views" of the electronic world. You seem to have an "analog view", while mine is "digital"

You would use an "inverter" while I would simply switch the needed power at the appropriate time. Bothe accomplish the same thing. I don't see anything here that is particularly complex, especially in regards a purely digital system. Though the software would be a bit more than "basic".

I'm reminded of a project back in the day; Designed the hardware and software for a "stepper motor" controller for use in an optical inspection system. Fortunately we wouldn't be using a processor like that old 8 bit thing today, and of course we have MOSFETs now...much better than bipolar.

By the way; for your circuit to work you will need to provide a "return" for the motor, and both positive and negative voltage (V+ and V-)
