Lets take a truthful look at what holy books say about the 'prophets of God'.
This isn't my opinion .. it's not me bad mouthing prophets ....
It's just me quoting exactly what scripture says. 'God's Word' about the prophets.
Hang on ... it's a bumpy ride.

MOSES - Mass Murder and Sex Slaver
MURDER - Exodus 2:11-15 In the course of time Moses grew up. Then he went to see his own people and watched them suffering under forced labor. He saw a Hebrew, one of his own people, being beaten by an Egyptian. 12 He looked all around, and when he didn’t see anyone, he beat the Egyptian to death and hid the body in the sand.

ORDERS VIRGIN SEX SLAVES FOR SOLDIERS - AND ORDERS MASS MURDER - Numbers 31:18 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, keep for yourselves.

MORE MASS MURDER - Exodus 32:26-29 Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and shouted, "All of you who are on the LORD's side, come over here and join me." And all the Levites came. He told them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Strap on your swords! Go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other, killing even your brothers, friends, and neighbors." The Levites obeyed Moses, and about three thousand people died that day. Then Moses told the Levites, "Today you have been ordained for the service of the LORD, for you obeyed him even though it meant killing your own sons and brothers. Because of this, he will now give you a great blessing."

There is so much terrorism and death with Joshua, I'll just quote some of the passage numbers. He learned how to mass murder from Moses very well ... leaving behind no human alive no matter how young; no animal; and no stone upon stone ...
JOSHUA - Terrorist and Mass Murderer of the Innocent and Destroyer of Towns and Mass Slaughter of Animals
Joshua 8:1-29 - Destruction of Ai
Joshua 6:20-21 - Destruction of Jericho
Joshua 7:19-26 - Kill the Families of SInners

ELISHA - Called God in to Kill Children
2 Kings 2:23-24 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. While he was on his way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him. "Go up baldhead," they shouted, "go up baldhead!" The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two shebears came out of the woods and tore forty two of the children to pieces. 2 Kings 2:23-24

Not sure if Isaiah is calling for this to happen ... or if he's saying it's going to happen in the future ... but it's more mass murder and baby killing and rape all for the glory of God ...
ISAIAH -
Isaiah 14:21 Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants.

Isaiah 13:15-18 - Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children.

EZEKIEL - Mass Murder
Ezekiel 9:5-7 Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all – old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told."

JEREMIAH - Mass Murder, Mass Butcher of Animals, Terrorist, Liar (the prophecy of a win in this battle failed), destroyer of cities

Jeremiah 48:10 Cursed be he who does the Lords work remissly, cursed he who holds back his sword from blood.

Jeremiah 50:21-22 Go up, my warriors, against the land of Merathaim and against the people of Pekod. Yes, march against Babylon, the land of rebels, a land that I will judge! Pursue, kill, and completely destroy them, as I have commanded you," says the LORD. "Let the battle cry be heard in the land, a shout of great destruction".

Jeremiah 51:20-26 "You are my battle-ax and sword," says the LORD. "With you I will shatter nations and destroy many kingdoms. With you I will shatter armies, destroying the horse and rider, the chariot and charioteer. With you I will shatter men and women, old people and children, young men and maidens. With you I will shatter shepherds and flocks, farmers and oxen, captains and rulers. "As you watch, I will repay Babylon and the people of Babylonia for all the wrong they have done to my people in Jerusalem," says the LORD. "Look, O mighty mountain, destroyer of the earth! I am your enemy," says the LORD. "I will raise my fist against you, to roll you down from the heights. When I am finished, you will be nothing but a heap of rubble. You will be desolate forever. Even your stones will never again be used for building. You will be completely wiped out," says the LORD.

SAMPSON - Killed People, God Busted Him out of Jail by Having Him (supposedly) Kill 1000 More
Judges 15:14-15 - When he reached Lehi, and the Philistines came shouting to meet him, the spirit of the Lord came upon him: the ropes around his arms become as flax that is consumed by fire and the bonds melted away from his hands. Near him was the fresh jawbone of an ass; he reached out, grasped it, and with it killed a thousand men.

SAMUEL - Mass Murder and Mass Slaughter of Animals
1 Samuel 15:2-3 - This is what the Lord of hosts has to say: 'I will punish what Amalek did to Israel when he barred his way as he was coming up from Egypt. Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.'

MICAH - Mass Murder, Destruction of a Town, Takes the Land for Himself
Judges 18:27-29 Then, with Micah's idols and his priest, the men of Dan came to the town of Laish, whose people were peaceful and secure. They attacked and killed all the people and burned the town to the ground. There was no one to rescue the residents of the town, for they lived a great distance from Sidon and had no allies nearby. This happened in the valley near Beth-rehob.Then the people of the tribe of Dan rebuilt the town and lived there. They renamed the town Dan after their ancestor, Israel's son, but it had originally been called Laish.

There is more ... much much more. An HONEST discussion about the Old Testament prophets should include 'Gods Word' ... right? Well ... here it is .... Gods word quoted. What a bloodbath. Mass murder. Rape. Mass kill off of animals. Towns destroyed. Lands stolen. Let's all be honest ... it's not a pretty picture, is it?

Same goes for most of the founding fathers we rever so much. These actions don't erase any good choices they made. But pretty much should ensure we don't look at them as Devine in some way.

Calls for pre-teen and teenage girl sex slaves for his soldiers. Someone want to tell me exactly why I should ignore that and exactly why I should respect any of that? Good luck ....

Sickening.
How ANYONE can still claim this book is the answer to everything is far beyond me.

In fact, if when my kids were little, they had wanted to read it (they never showed any interest), I would probably have said, "Well, it's for adults. Wait until you are at least 16." Talk about loss of innocence!

Appalling.

Sure. But lets not forget about the bad as well. Take an even handed look at everything all together. Don't put these people up on an untouchable pedestal under the guise of 'don't dare talk about the calls for rape ... because he's supposedly a 'prophet' ... Take an HONEST look at the WHOLE package. That's the smart thing to do. Right? Otherwise, the image that gets put together for these people is dishonest. IMHO

Meh? What's "questionable" about it? YOU don't like it? So read the New Testament, in which God was in a much better mood. It's not like this stuff is new. Read Bertrand Russell's "Why I am not a Christian" for a more erudite take on the whole issue--not just a bullet listing of a few "atrocities" as viewed from a 21st century politically correct perspective. After all, they didn't have a Bill of Rights back then, and the courts had not yet ruled on same-sex marriage. God was a Super Hero who kicked some serious butt back then, not the wimpy compliant "everything you want to do is just peachy!" wuss we've turned Him into today. Are you getting a clue as to who God really is yet?

A 'few atrocities'? A 21st-century Politically correct perspective? They are atrocities PERIOD.
No matter when they occurred. Yesterday, tomorrow, last week, 5000 years ago....no difference. Atrocious.

But what is it that you mean about "who God really is" - what do YOU think God is?

I already have. (haven't finished)

I already know who God is ... well at least I know where NOT to find him.

I do think if people actually read through the bible and thought about its wickedness in the name of God, they would not be so gullible. Blind faith is a stupid thing when you don't actually know what you have blind faith in.

I would not wish to have my history as repeated in the bible danced out for every generation to read. The word honour has no imput in the relationship between God and his chosen. He even had to have the people impaled infront of Moses in order to get them to leave worshipping the Golden Calf.

I often hear that one 'needs' religion for its moral guidance and again its said by those whom presumable have never read the bible.

Starred! [I will Flag asap!]

I think you are on the right track, however Moses was upfront about recording his own failings and that must be also considered.

However Joshua clearly broke some vital commandments, after Moses died, about not adding to or taking away from the holy text when he clearly wrote the final part of Moses last book of the Torah and offered the whole tribe of Isreal to follow their own pagan Gods brought out of Egypt with them.

Deut 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Deut 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

But ...

Joshua 24:26And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

... (pls read all of Joshua chptr24 for full context especially as Joshua offers Israel to take after false GODS Joshua 24:14-15 therefor Joshua is condemned by Deut 12:29-31 specifically vrs 30 AND Deut 13:1-11 specifically vrs's 1-3) directly Contradicts the two Deuteronomy scriptures provided above.

There was no need to do this at all! because God had already sealed the deal! Joshua screwed with that!

Therefor all the prophets [starting with Joshua] who add to or take away from the written word of Moses and God are sinning greatly!

As for whether it is a pretty picture or not, the bible would be a very short story if it was all sweetness and light, so I think it is meant to cover all the bases including Gods wrathfulness such as the claimed global flood killing all but 8 human beings on the planet.

Are the prophets wrong OR are they just doing and saying what God told them to do?

Because who is more psychotic

I vote to diminish it anyway. Absentee 'boss' = we make our own rules.
No killing.
If "God" is upset about it, he can just jolly well come back and re-state his policies. They're out of date and barbaric. And even if he did, I would not comply.

"No." It's not that hard to say.

There ya' go. The 'God' of the Old Testament is the exact polar opposite of the God of the New Testament. So were the 'prophets' psychotic killers .. or is the 'God' of the Old Testament? Considering how the God of the New Testament is ... I'm leaning towards the prophets of the Old Testament being rather bloodthirsty all on their own.

And doesn't this sound like someone got their ego bruised ... ELISHA - Called God in to Kill Small Children

What would Jesus have done? Does anyone think He would have called down the power of God and had God tear apart 42 small children because a couple of them taunted Him ??? I'm not seeing it happening ....

I don't get it FF .You claim that Moses didn't exist and was a fictional charter ! What would be the point of you claiming he said this or that if you don't believe he was a real person ? I think you need to have a point at which to start .No sense in you trying to reason about things you don't consider to have happened ....peace

Moses may or may not have existed. Exodus absolutely didn't happen the way it is claimed in scripture. Exodus has been largely proven wrong.

What would be the point of you claiming he said this or that if you don't believe he was a real person ?

I'm not claiming he said anything. SCRIPTURE claims he did.

This is a valid discussion about how the 'prophets' of the Old Testament are portrayed and how they are put on a pedestal by some followers. But the very book that is supposedly 'Gods Word' shows that these 'prophets' did some very unholy things. The question is ... why do those who buy into the Old Testament refuse to acknowledge the evil that was done, but instead just look at what is supposedly good?

Valid question. Valid discussion.

The point, imo, is that the Bible is about as "holy" and "good" as the ravings of any mass-murdering d-bag. In fact, that's what the OT God is.

Have any of you read The Evolution of God by Robert Wright?
Gives a very clear and entertaining account of how the concept has changed and grown through the eons. Hindsight is 20/20.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about humanity's thoughts on a 'higher power.'

Lets take a truthful look at what holy books say about the 'prophets of God'.

Exodus 2:11-15 He saw a Hebrew, one of his own people, being beaten by an Egyptian. 12 He looked all around, and when he didn’t see anyone, he beat the Egyptian to death and hid the body in the sand.

This was simply protecting his own people, defending them. The Egyptian may have beaten the Hebrew to death, cruelly and evilly, especially in the eyes of the Lord. Moses didn't claim that the Lord prompted him to do this, however. It was more of a moral obligation.

(modern example: Ukrainian Police killing Ukrainian protesters, and were thus beaten and/or killed by protesters.)

Numbers 31:18 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, keep for yourselves.

While this is no longer acceptable behavior among most modern humans, at the time it was based on their understanding of mankind. The boys would grow up to be enemies of them. The non-virgin females may be pregnant with boys that will be future enemies, as all males from that tribe typically were for hundreds of years. It could be implied that they'd teach the wrong culture as Mothers, while the virgins knew-not .. yet, and could be 're-educated'. The main point was to destroy the male line and the culture/religion of the enemy tribe, 'enemies of God'.

Exodus 32:26-29 "All of you who are on the LORD's side, come over here and join me." And all the Levites came. He told them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Strap on your swords! Go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other, killing even your brothers, friends, and neighbors." The Levites obeyed Moses, and about three thousand people died that day.

These were the traitors of the people who went against God's direct commands, as well as their leader's commands, Moses. They built the golden calf idol, and starting worshipping it, and possibly doing other unsightly things in the eyes of their brothers. Moses returned after being with God and receiving the Ten Commandments to see this, and needed to kill the traitors.

They disrespected the Prophet of the Lord! Lol.. apparently they were evil little children. And likely had evil adults allowed them to do this, and observing it, all enemies of the Lord and his Prophet. Maybe God wanted to teach the evil adults a lesson, which is a recurring theme in the Old Testament.

This should be referring to the Medes, who were not Godly people, but evil Idolaters. Regardless, God wanted to turn them against the Babylonians, who were even more evil, and this is how they wrote that he did it. Whether it was God's idea, or a human leader's idea claimed to be from God.

God marked the good people with a mark on their forehead, so that all the evil-doers and enemies of the Lord within the Priests would die.

Evil Idolaters that God and/or God's "people" required dead. When it is believed that the enemy are truly evil-doers, and that thine own people are God's chosen, it becomes pretty easy to start sacking non-Monotheistic, non-YHWH worshipping Kingdoms.

Samson was a warrior of the people of sorts, a guerrilla fighter for God and Israel. At that time, the Phillistines, who were evil Idolaters, were raping, killing, and plundering Israel. He went and killed 1,000 of the enemy warriors (who subsequently, were trying to CAPTURE him, and imprison or kill him).

The Amalekites were one of the most evil, sinister tribes in opposition to God and God's people. They were desert raiders, and had attacked and killed Hebrews, ransacked their camps, and taken their women hostage. War.

You were wrong about this one. The Danites took Micah's idol from him after threatening him. Then THEY took it to the town, killed the people there, and re-settled the town, placing their Idol and worshipping it. Dan in particular was known for this incident to be Idolaters, and thus are not listed in the 144,000 chosen from the 12 Tribes of Israel in the Book of Revelation.

None of these events that have been documented in the Old Testament are necessarily justified by any means. Nor do we know for a fact if they all happened in the manner that they were written. What we can do is try to put ourselves in the mindset of the people of that time period, what was considered normal behaviors of ritual, religion, and war.

Seems to me the OT "god" showed no mercy to his enemies, nor did he love them. This is in stark contrast to what Jesus taught. How Christians can believe Jesus and Yahweh ae the same being is beyond me. It seems obvious to me that some things were changed within the gospels and/or Paul's epistles to accomadate Jesus being Yahweh.
