The September 11th attacks on the U.S. and the March 11th train bombing in Madrid are linked according the FBI. Calling the evidence the clearest link yet, the FBI has told Spanish investigators that one of the men suspected in planning the 911 attacks may have also given the go ahead for the train bombing. The bombing in Madrid claimed over 190 lives and wounded almost 2000. Hijacker Mohammed Atta had also visited Spain and met with the men that may be responsible for the Madrid attacks.

MADRID (Reuters) - The FBI has established the clearest link yet between the March 11 Madrid train bombings and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, a Spanish newspaper reported Sunday.

The FBI has told Spanish investigators that one of three men believed to have planned the Sept. 11 attacks from Spain in the summer of 2001 also gave the order to carry out the Madrid blasts, the newspaper ABC reported.

The train bombings killed 191 people and wounded 1,900 three days before a general election. In videotapes, the bombers claimed the attacks in the name of al Qaeda in Europe and said they were in revenge for Spain sending troops to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Investigators have long concluded that the Sept. 11 attacks were partially planned in Spain in July 2001.

If true it shows the reach and scope of Al Qaeda. The sad thing is it no doubt influenced the Spanish elections. Is Spain safer today? Doubtful at best. However, it does show the need for the type of global cooperation that is going to be needed if the fight against terrorism is going to be won. The EU is making strides to make information sharing easier within its member states, and perhaps a worldwide effort is needed. It is also scary to see that the planning for the Madrid attack occurred in 2001. How many of these sleepers are lurking in our hometowns?
