US-Russia (Soviet) treaty to prevent an incident during interception and overflights after a number of aircraft were damaged or shot down.

Fighters wont lock their fire control onto the aircraft, aircraft with tail guns will point them up and away from the fighters, and they won't lock onto or fly an attack profile on ships.

Ok.. Thanks for sharing that.. But i am specifically looking for details as far as flying parameters or "rules".

If "rules" were broken then i can understand out cry .

So much for being a deterrent? I wonder if the Russians have subs in the Black Sea?

here is what is listed as the known russian black sea fleet. There would be additional assets brought in considering the recent problems and world attention.

Does this ship have any defenses for a attack by way of jet.
I know nothing about weapons on these ships.
Could the ship lock on to the plains, like to just say yea we see you up there.
Would that let the pilots know they could be taken out.

US Government should answer why the hell are their ships in the Black Sea. Their time limit was reached long ago and they have no right to be there at the moment. Russians were probably just trolling and since US Ship has no right to be there, they have no right to complain.

Simple answer to that is Lithuania is a NATO country, one of several in Eastern Europe out of around 28-29 countries. They have complained before about Russian overflys without the paperwork. By all accounts NATO craft were invited in.

Im missing something here !
If I stood in my neighbours garden and started shaking a big stick at him, and then he let his dog out in the garden, that would be him being aggressive and provocative would it ? lol

The Black Sea is in International Waters. U.S. Navy has as much right to be there as the Russian Navy.

No the Black sea is not in international waters. Most of it belongs to the nations that surround it namely Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Turkey.

Turkey and Romania are NATO members, and have invited U.S. Naval ships into their waters as a deterrent to further Russian aggression.

Maybe you should reread what you posted the Black sea is not all international waters.

I just hope for the sake of planet Earth that the United States doesn't react to this by shooting the next one out of the sky, or somehow an anti-aircraft missile 'accidentally' shoots one out of the sky.

We're very close to a place we don't want to be right now and the slightest provocation or reaction might just set off a nasty chain of events.

I hope we don't overreact too, but our Navy and Military will only stand down to a certain point, and after this provocation by the Russians, the possibility of a military exchange increases.

When are you lot going to wake up and realise that poking the Russian Bear with a pointy stick is a bloody stupid idea?

What was the US vessel doing in the Black Sea? Making a point!

What was the Russian fighter doing? Making a point right back!

If the US wants a full scale apocalyptic war with, possibly the toughest, most determined people on the planet, they are going the right way.....Russia is not Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya.

In WWII the Soviet Union absorbed over 20 million casualties compared to the 400-450 thousand suffered by America or Britain.....So don't ever imagine these people will roll over in fear of the mighty west!

So what's it to be? A more reasonable attitude to the Russians (ie: stop trying to back them into a geopolitical corner).....Or back to the stone age for all of us?

As Vladimir Putin is very probably thinking right now....."It's your move punk!"

The Black Sea is a special case of international waters. Access to it for outside states is limited by the Montreux Convention.

Basically, the total tonnage of all foreign vessels in the Black Sea may not exceed 45000 tons, each outside power may not bring in more than 30000 tons (2/3 of total), and each outside power cannot bring in more than 9 ships at the same time, and those ships may not stay for more than 3 weeks for any reason. And you cannot bring any aircraft carriers.

But.. As he said, Turkey Romania who are nato members and Ukraine who are pleading for international help can all give passage

The US with authority from Ukraine could come all the way to Ukraine coast if there really wanted to, but digging holes and escalation is best left to Russia for now

Is keeping a ship in the Black Sea longer than the allotted time allowed by treaty, not a provocation?

I bet he was ordered to do that, that's pretty suicidal if you think about it but maybe he's an idiot.

When Russia stops its aggression toward Ukraine, pulls back its 40,000 troops from the boarder, complies with international law, respects its agreement toward the Budapest memorandum ?

When is Russia going to stop poking its neighbors?

Russia isn't Iraq, or Afghanistan, which suits the US & NATO down to the ground, Russia knows full well she cannot challenge NATO, shes just playing games

Perhaps you should brush up on your WWII history, Russia sustained such heavy casualty's because the Germans steamrolled and outclassed the Russian in ever area of military tech, without the western front Russia would be speaking German, had it not been for the allies Germany would have went all the way

Consider NATO is many many time larger than the Russian military with better tech the odds are slim to none putting asides thermo nuclear

Russia seems to sustainable heavy causalities where ever she fights due to having a POORLY trained and maintained army

So whats it to be?...

Simple let them keep digging a big hole, pile on political pressure and sanctions, and what them crumble, the US has every right to come to the aid of NATO member states as deterrent, they're not Russian waters, and that is exactly what this is... a show of force to deter Russia from thinking about a full scale invasion of Ukraine

Putin isn't stupid he weighs up very well what he can and cant get away with

Ah…the poor US. Isn’t it terrible the big bad Russian bear is messing with the US, the poor little thing

The US only destroyed Iraq…100’s of thousands now dead.
Help ruin Libya, tried and is trying to start wars in Syria and Iran
Have murdered 100’s in drone strikes

Interfered in Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Africa and all over the world

Lined up countries bordering Russia in NATO

While I find your post amusing, where did Russia "Bully" the U.S.? That Destroyer would have swatted that thing out of the sky like a fly if it wanted to. I bet those on the ship were enjoying a good laugh.

No

It's not unusual for U.S. Navy ships to operate in the Black Sea. The Donald Cook moved into the region last week for what the Navy called "routine operations," though the deployment is seen mostly as a symbolic response to tensions along the Ukrainian-Russian border.

they can also get permission from NATO members

The formal treaty isn't posted online. But overflights like this are a technical violation of the treaty.

NATO is an imperialist alliance with the goal of maintaining western global hegemony.

Russia is an imperialist superpower with the goal of regional hegemony.

However in reality, the SCO is also an imperial alliance between Asian powers with defence pacts. Russia is not alone, they have economic and defensive pacts, along with military inoperability with other countries to various degrees.

If war broke out with NATO, the battle would be fought for three key strategic areas around Russia: Eastern Europe, central Asia/Caucasus, Asia-Pacific. It is fantasy to think that Russia would have to invade western Europe or the USA to win against NATO.

Russia seems to sustainable heavy causalities where ever she fights due to having a POORLY trained and maintained army

I call BS. You have no idea how well trained or maintained their forces are. Russia almost took all of Georgia using veteran units from Chechnya in a week.

And if you really want to persist that Russian military is poorly maintained, then watch what happens when such a "advanced" military like the USA fails to maintain the vast logistics and extensive maintenance of its forces in such a high-loss conflict. All Russia needs to do is take out your AWACS and they will be picking off your blind "air supremacy" fighters.
