US-Russia (Soviet) treaty to prevent an incident during interception and overflights after a number of aircraft were damaged or shot down.
Fighters wont lock their fire control onto the aircraft, aircraft with tail guns will point them up and away from the fighters, and they won't lock onto or fly an attack profile on ships.edit on 4/14/2014 by Zaphod58 because: (no reason given)

So much for being a deterrent? I wonder if the Russians have subs in the Black Sea?
baburak
US Government should answer why the hell are their ships in the Black Sea. Their time limit was reached long ago and they have no right to be there at the moment. Russians were probably just trolling and since US Ship has no right to be there, they have no right to complain.

Im missing something here !
If I stood in my neighbours garden and started shaking a big stick at him, and then he let his dog out in the garden, that would be him being aggressive and provocative would it ? lol
The Black Sea is in International Waters. U.S. Navy has as much right to be there as the Russian Navy.
No the Black sea is not in international waters. Most of it belongs to the nations that surround it namely Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Turkey.
Turkey and Romania are NATO members, and have invited U.S. Naval ships into their waters as a deterrent to further Russian aggression.

I just hope for the sake of planet Earth that the United States doesn't react to this by shooting the next one out of the sky, or somehow an anti-aircraft missile 'accidentally' shoots one out of the sky.
We're very close to a place we don't want to be right now and the slightest provocation or reaction might just set off a nasty chain of events.

Maybe you should reread what you posted the Black sea is not all international waters.

When are you lot going to wake up and realise that poking the Russian Bear with a pointy stick is a bloody stupid idea?
What was the US vessel doing in the Black Sea? Making a point!
What was the Russian fighter doing? Making a point right back!
If the US wants a full scale apocalyptic war with, possibly the toughest, most determined people on the planet, they are going the right way.....Russia is not Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya.
In WWII the Soviet Union absorbed over 20 million casualties compared to the 400-450 thousand suffered by America or Britain.....So don't ever imagine these people will roll over in fear of the mighty west!
So what's it to be? A more reasonable attitude to the Russians (ie: stop trying to back them into a geopolitical corner).....Or back to the stone age for all of us?
As Vladimir Putin is very probably thinking right now....."It's your move punk!"edit on 14-4-2014 by squarehead666 because: s&p

Ah…the poor US. Isn’t it terrible the big bad Russian bear is messing with the US, the poor little thing
The US only destroyed Iraq…100’s of thousands now dead.
Help ruin Libya, tried and is trying to start wars in Syria and Iran
Have murdered 100’s in drone strikes
Interfered in Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Africa and all over the world
Lined up countries bordering Russia in NATO

Is keeping a ship in the Black Sea longer than the allotted time allowed by treaty, not a provocation?
It's not unusual for U.S. Navy ships to operate in the Black Sea. The Donald Cook moved into the region last week for what the Navy called "routine operations," though the deployment is seen mostly as a symbolic response to tensions along the Ukrainian-Russian border.

Consider NATO is many many time larger than the Russian military with better tech the odds are slim to none putting asides thermo nuclear
Russia seems to sustainable heavy causalities where ever she fights due to having a POORLY trained and maintained army
