Tropical cyclone Ita has been upgraded to a category 5 system and is expected to bring 285km/h winds to north Queensland.

Cyclone Ita intensified to a category 5 system and began tracking faster towards the coast about 4pm on Thursday, with its speed increasing from 16km/h to 18km/h.

Weather forecasters predict Ita will make landfall north of Cooktown on Friday night, with 9000 people directly in its path.

Well, let us hope it changes course before then. It may yet degrade, we can hope.

Great, the conspiracy folks are going to have a field day, first its the flight itself, now its, "...isn't it strange that we JUST happened to find the BB at the last second??? Omg something is up.."
Now a hurricane conveniently pops up AT THAT RIGHT MOMENT so progress will hinder the search, giving the insidious Govs time to re-construct a replacement BB, THE HURRICANE MUST BE MAN MADE WITH HAARP!!!!!
ugh.

On the OP...

I hope the folks there stay safe and hunker down, those hurricanes are pretty bad, especially a CAT 5, load up on that VEGEMITE, lord knows.....

Let rational thinking prevail, please..?

Correct me if I'm wrong, Aussies, but isn't this cyclone/hurricane to hit more on the North/Northeast side of your country/continent?

Peace & safety to all those who may be affected...

Question for the OP/those aware...Do you have seasons for these acts of nature, or are they year-round?

We have a season here that lasts from May to October over here in the states -- to visit oz is on my bucket list --but what is the deal on defined times?
If any?

Thanks in advance for planning purposes & hopes that this will miss you!

I have one word for you if you live in that area.

EVACUATE!

I live in Miami and lived through hurricane Andrew.

en.wikipedia.org...

A Cat 5 is no joke. I remember going down to homestead to help people out who lived down there and it looked like a war zone.

Hmmm I had better get down to the shops early in the morning and pick up some bananas before they suddenly spike upwards in price due to supply and demand issues.

Take care everyone who is in the path of this monster storm!

I was near Katrina when it hit.

BAD IDEA!

I hope those out there take it seriously, the wind is just the first part living afterward is the toughest.

Good Luck Australia!

New Orleans and Homestead send their regards & support to Oz.
Here's to hoping it pitters out, sometimes those biggies kill themselves off before reaching land.

BZZZZ, you lose. Wrong coast. Queensland = East. BB & search area = off west coast. That's like claiming a hurricane hitting NC is going to hinder a search area off California.

Fill up all your gas tanks.
Get at least a week supply of food. Dry and can food is preferable.
And a gallon of water per day per person to drink and cook with.
Enough fuel to cook food.
board up your windows.
get batteries and flashlights.
Coolers with ICE.
make sure you have enough medicine and first aid stuffs.

In any cat 2 or greater storm the power will go out and may stay out for weeks.
Your food will spoil.
You won't be able to go to the store and get food or gas.
You'll be own your own so be prepared.

Yeah it's going to hit way up near the tip of Queensland, on a map that would be the pointy bit on the top northeast corner of the continent. There is a tonne of rainforest up there but thankfully it's not densely inhabited.

Oh and I need to correct something: Fosters Lager is just the crud we export to unsuspecting foreigners. We keep the good stuff for ourselves

Yes indeed ... but I am in Canberra ACT about 1000+km south of the storm.

But no matter where anyone is on Australia ... banana's tend to come from QLD and any interruption to supply will force the prices to increase dramatically!

For example ... Cyclone Andrew [Ithink it was andrew?] forced the banana prices up from about $4 a kilo up to nearly $20 a kilo.

I may have to freeze some banana's to make them last as long as possible.

I'm glad you're not in the area.

But keep an eye on the storm anyways. Hurricanes can be un predictable.

This is why we export it to the rest of the world. We don't actually drink it.
