The Catholic Kill-joys who condemn Sister Cristina

For those of you who have not yet seen / heard of this amazing talented and spirited young nun, here is the YT clip that has shot her into fame while endearing many hearts with her genuine devotion to God and the church.



As you can see, we have a thoroughly modern and in touch young lady who is not scared to show to the world that she is a nun and that she has a talent that can speak to everyone.

You'd think that in the catholic church we'd be rejoicing the fact that someone has come out of the woodwork and presented a totally modern and inspirational face for a church that is deeply mired in scandal.

But no. A deeply conservative and quite frankly outmoded sect has decided that she ought to be condemned for being sacrilegious.

"An Ursuline Sister of the Holy Family by the name of Cristina Scuccia -- Suor Cristina -- participated in the Italian secular talent show The Voice of Italy, performing the 2007 Alicia Keys song No One. The video clip of the event (see below) shows to what depths the Modernist Vatican II Church has fallen, with someone who has supposedly consecrated her entire life to Christ, singing, swaying, and acting in such a profane and indecent manner. A nun's black habit, we recall, signifies her death to the world, something "Sister" Christina must have forgotten as she belted out this song with somewhat suggestive lyrics (see here), and not for the honor and glory of God but to receive the adulation and applause of the world. But then again, at age 25, it is clear that she was entirely raised and educated in the Novus Ordo Sect, not the Catholic Church, so perhaps we can excuse her behavior on those grounds alone. What she has done is utterly scandalous, indecent, immodest, and sacrilegious. "

How is the church ever going to survive if we have these stuffy old types rattling around telling us that nuns can't get out there and show they are just like us, while still representing God?

I showed this vid to my sister, a single mother who has abandoned the church because she suffers from the feeling that everyone looks down upon her from a 'holier than thou' point of view due to her out of wedlock son and she was ecstatic. She has been saying things like 'that nun is just like us' and 'she totally rocks that habit' It has inspired her to pick up a bible and have bit of a read and a re-think about Christianity i.e. she might not be an outcast with no hope after all.

If that isn't evangelism, I don't know what is.

I was born and raised in a strict Catholic family in the 50's. Catholic private schools until I went to college.

It is stories like this, that remind me why I left the church, and turned my back on it's medieval teachings and attitude.

Bless her for showing and sharing the glory of her gift. Screw those uptight jealous arseholes who condemn her.

I hope she comes out with a song I can pay for and download.

The Novus Ordo watchsite is run by a group of traditionalist Catholics, a very small, exclusive sect of Catholicism who use the old mass exclusively and reject the new mass instituted after the Vatican II council. They reject most all of the reforms made after the Vatican II council and some believe the papacy has been vacant since 1965.

While I do sympathize with many of their views and beliefs, I think you should keep in mind that they are a very small sect of very conservative Catholics and do not represent the majority view of the Catholic Church. I'm sure that most modern Catholics are thrilled by this nun's performance and I wouldn't be surprised if she was congratulated by the Pope himself.

Don't let a very small sect of the Catholic Church poison your opinion of how Catholics view this incident. In all things, there will be some naysayers, even against the most positive of performances.

I'm not poisoned by it. More disappointed in the fact that when something so positive has just happened the killjoys have to try and bring it down.

I'm catholic myself and am purely delighted in what she is doing. I hope more of the clergy follow suit; This is just what a cynical and disconnected world needs to see - that the church can retain it's dignity and beliefs while still being integrated with the modern world we live in.

Thanks for pointing out they are a very small, with very small minds, segment of the Catholic Church. I have Catholic friends who are not of the old school ideology of the Church should never change with time.

I chose a different spiritual path more to my liking. It's fine and dandy for the small minded to live their path...but to try to punish the gifted Nun and nail her feet to their path, is wrong.

And that is the sad fact of catholicism for many of us, including me. We walked away from the church because the people in it did not make us feel welcome or relevant.

A nun like Sister Cristina is a voice from behind the closed door screaming 'we're not all like that.'

She brought the LIGHT OF LIFE to that performance and that audience and that IS GODLY!

You have touched on something that I believe about this nun;

She has more than a great voice. I believe she also has a very rare gift - that of healing with song. I have watched that vid so many times I have lost count and like the rapper J-Ax, I can't keep the tears from my eyes when I hear her sing and speak.

She is the face of what the church should be more like.

God is not unconditional, it's sort of the same as Jews and Israel, there are conditions to them inheriting the Holyland. The rules are not meant to be broken otherwise it would be pointless teaching them in the first place. So what do I think about her gift? It is sensual not spiritual.

I'm an atheist but I still can respect this and think it's cool that she did it, rocked it, and has the pope's vote.

Who gets to decide if ones joyful noise is not what this was talking about?

I certainly won't be trying to interpret her joyful noise. It sounded pretty awesome to me. People need to stop judging folks about things like this. The scriptures can be interpreted differently by anyone. Again... whose to say ones interpretation is more right than someone else's?

What rules exactly has she broken?

I see a nun singing a modern song, called 'only you' She is a bride of Christ. I interpret that song as being especially fitting - she is singing to Jesus words like 'only me and you together.'

If you find a nun in an unflattering outfit sensual, you might want to take a good look at yourself. She is dressed like that because other than the muslim burqua you cannot dress more modestly.
