It could be possible that it is so distorted because of the distance of the object appearing in the video.

Where in that video clip is a Huge Extraterrestrial Fleet?
It seems to me the earlier poster did the work the OP should have done and pretty much solved this non-issue.

From the Ustream link in the OP: "Live video from the International Space Station includes internal views when the crew is on-duty and Earth views at other times......When the station is in darkness, external camera video may appear black, but can sometimes provide spectacular views of lightning or city lights below." this camera is facing downward towards earth.

It looks like debris from an impacted comet or asteroid, something that had a collision in space and the bits just kept carrying on.

It's also difficult to tell where the camera was, or where it was pointed. It could also just be garbage discharged from the ISS itself.

Hmmmm.

I swear to you I didn't see this earlier but suspected something was up with the ISS that I can't shake. Something related to the other two big things going on. I'm getting more weirded out now. Time to sleep it off.

It's my opinion that this video shows a close up and slowed down view of a fart being released into the vacuum of space, nothing more nothing less, simply astonishing.

Very interesting, too bad the quality isn't that good.

Dang it Jim, you beat me to it. Yes, fishing boats. At exactly that time in the video, ISS was right over an area known to have large fleets of fishing boats operating at night forming groupings of lights just like that.

For the forum, they're "emerging" from behind one of the station's modules, which you can't see because it's in complete darkness. Earlier in the feed you can see where the camera's pointed, the module fills up more than half the view. I think that's Columbus (Jim you'd know better than me which module that is).

You can also see that the camera is pointed towards earth, and that the "lights" are moving at the same rate that the station is orbiting earth. Therefore the most logical conclusion is that those lights are on earth. Using the time of the feed to look up where ISS was at that time based on the orbital elements...

...bingo, right over the Falkland Islands. Fishing boats creating groupings of lights like this are known to operate near the Falkland islands at night.

The boats in the GOCE image look like they're islands themselves, but they're actually just groupings of individual fishing boats. And that's exactly where ISS was in this video.
