earthquake.usgs.gov...

at 7 km deep, that had to be felt over a wide area.

Also, that is in a dangerous spot, off the Juan De Fuca plate. That could be a foreshock. Lookout folks, the long awaited big one might be brewing. Let's hope not.

USGS upped the magnitude to 6.9... That is dangerous and could trigger more activity on that subduction zone.

There had been some previous quake activity there in the last month, and all of this is near the Mendocino Triple Junction. NOT a good spot to have that kind of energy released!

Here is the last 30 days 2.5+ activity:

In retrospect, it seemed to be brewing. Of course, hindsight is 20/20...

Whole coast all the way down to Mexico is inching towards the sea, I bet.

Just because you don't feel anything doesn't mean a tsunami is not headed your way!

Please stay alert and prepared to head to higher ground asap!

The west coast of the USA will be in my prayers!

Stay Safe!

I wonder if a tsunami warning was issued, or if such a mechanism is in place for larger quakes. We have been trending towards a potentially large quake off the coast of California for some time, so I hope all safeguards are in place. Hoping against hope that this is the main quake and not a precursor to anything larger. Stay safe everybody.

A tsunami is highly unlikely at that magnitude of 6.9, and if there is one, it would be tiny. My serious concern is for the minutes, hours and immediate days ahead. Watch out people. Seriously. I also worry about triggering for the volcanoes in the area, especially Long Valley. You can bet I am watching them like a hawk. So far, no apparent effect.

Already 3 aftershocks posted on USGS around 3.5 each but deeper than the 6.9. I hope that's all there is and this isn't the precursor to a nasty inevitability that will eventually cause some major damage there.

ETA: I checked the NOAA tsunami reports and they have no warnings out at the moment.

Westcoast here checking in;

TA...you already summed up my concerns. You are correct about there NOT being a tsunami, according to tsunami.gov the coast is clear (pun intented)

Please keep a close look out tonight (will you be up for awhile?). I haven't been able to get GEE to work for me lately.

yeah, and another bigger aftershock coming in now... update in a minute...

looks like a 4.6, and yup, the aftershocks are spreading out...
edit on Mon Mar 10th 2014 by TrueAmerican because: (no reason given)

Jesus, that 4.6 was real shallow at 2.6 km... I don't like the looks of this, so close to that triple junction.

Sure enough…they have it at a 4.5 but I'm sure that will be revised soon. Depth is 2.5 so they still seem pretty shallow…I just hope activity pushes away from that junction.

ETA: I would figure if activity was tightening on that area we may be seeing foreshocks but I will leave the expert opinions to you
