So what exactly do all you parental basement dwelling, armchair generals suggest we do?

Economic sanctions .... Have Russia blackballed from the G-8 and the G-20.
Get the European Union involved. They can get their energy from other sources.
The UN is in New York, we can put a freeze on any Russian 'diplomats' being able to go through NYC airports.
Those are the kinds of things a POTUS can do ... and SHOULD be doing.

Oh ... and I do not live with my mother, nor in the basement.

Wait, wouldnt cause a war between us and Russia? That sort of reminds me of what we did to Japan, and then Pearl Harbor happened.

Well, I'm not sure the UK is talking to the US. At the same time Obama said Russia had broken International Law etc, Cameron has said there will be no UK military intervention or financial sanctions or otherwise against Russia....he wants to talk.
London couldn't afford financial sanctions against Russia atm anyhow.

Ukraine are going to look pretty silly tomorrow at 3am their time....think they are running around like headless chickens playing Chinese whispers.....but meh, what the heck do I know.

I wish that this does not turn into a war.
We should be looking after one another, not killing each other in these times.
The world really is upside down.

What is this insane suggestion by some people of moving military forces and going toe to toe with Russia?

And what happens when NATO and Russia are eyeball to eyeball and neither side refuses to back down? One spark and the whole thing goes up in flames and we're all thrown into the abyss.

People should be looking to the outbreak of the First World War here rather than the old cliched Hitler/appeasement analogies, to see just how a situation can escalate out of control.

Once again tough guy.... what would you suggest we do under the circumstances? Do you have a plan that would back Putin down? Is there conceivably any action that would stop what seems to be inevitable?

With Ukraine permission and VIA the defense pact signed in 1994. The USA starts to mass troops in the eastern side of Ukraine. Take key military choke points to stop the Russians from just walking in and setting up shop. It’s that simple. You can’t fight the Russians with words. Do as Reagan would do. Go toe to toe but don’t throw punches.

That would simply make matters worse as it would make the Russians look weak and give them no room to save face without going to war. Ukraine is more than capable of defending itself against what Russia could afford to thow at it. As of right now just the threat of Western economic actions are causing havock with the Russian economy and markets. Including a run on trading Russian Roubles for Dollars in Russia and a selling off of Russian stocks. That is a good sign that the Russian people have zero confidence in this entire thing. And Reagan would not toss US troops forward he was much more of fund and aid the rebels kind of guy. What the West is doing right now is just what they need to do.

Meanwhile in Russia, Ol' Vlad is really...

He called Obama's bluff and now the public's response being Obama is soft will indeed cause the next escalation. The NATO meeting will decide if this turns into an all out war. I don't see Putin backing down.

I will be interested to see if China takes advantage of this situation and moves on their interests as well.

Although you used that phrase I wasn't specifically referring to you. I've been reading other such comments on the BBC News website.

What would I do? Well not come out with jingoistic statements and start talking about military options. You'd obviously have no qualms about starting a third world war.

The French? Look, now really isn't the time for a discussion about the collapse of France in World War II, but it's a ridiculous analogy to be making.

You're acting like France didn't fight, which isn't true. But we're not talking the Second World War here, we're talking the crisis in Ukraine.

This is exactly what we need to do. If sanctions work, then okay, if not then let the Russians invade if they really want to, and then spend the next decade fighting millions of angry Ukrainians while the west supports said angry Ukrainians with various lethal and non-lethal aide. THAT'S what Reagan or any halfway decent POTUS would have done. It would put the onus of world opinion on the Russians for invading a sovereign nation while at the same time allowing the west to give Putin a major bloody nose without having to start WW3 over the Crimea.

Yanukovich the officially elected leader was thrown out by right wing parties illegally after giving threats to his life and well being.

The new government in Ukraine is the work of Thugs and Right Wing losers of the society who do not have anything else to do.

This Right wing fascist coup has to be undone. Russia is correct in wanting to nip this nonsense at the roots.

The legally elected leader of Ukraine has asked Russia to provide support and that support is being given to maintain calm and order.

Russia does not have to dump bonds neither does China. It can hurt them in the pocket. Just give $10M worth ammo to fanatics in Afghanistan and their exit tickets for 2014 will be canclled with full refunds. Why refunds? 'cause then they will be learning Afghan language for next few decades.

Russia can do things that would raise oil prices and throw European economies into recession or sorts.

Bottomline is get the hell out and away from Russia's "near abroad". If NATO does not understand that then if has to ask if its bankrupt economies can handle another Cold War where Russian and Chinese hands are not tied down by Commie economics.

Right wing fascism, overt or covert will be met with hard and crippling response.

You do not sell off the bonds of the side you know is going to come out on top. Their is a reason right now banks in Russia have run out of dollars and the rouble is collapsing. Just the idea of these things have sent Russia into to tail spin. The reality is Russia is massively vulnerable to Western economic actions. And the Chinese would be happy to grab some more markets from the Russians.

Think NATO should position a defense force is west Ukraine or in Poland. That will halt any further Russian advance.

Then get the UN to monitor a referendum in East Ukrainian and Crimea on whether they want to stay Ukrainian or go to Russia.

Ruble Plunges to Record as Bank Rossii Seen Selling $10 Billion

Bank Rossii poured dollars into the currency market, with traders estimating sales of about $10 billion, and raised interest rates after the threat of Western sanctions against Russia sent the ruble to a record low.

Policy makers are stepping up efforts to shore up the ruble as investor demand for Russian assets dries up after President Vladimir Putin’s military forces took over parts of neighboring Ukraine. The ruble sank 1.8 percent against the dollar today, more than any other currency tracked by Bloomberg, while the benchmark Micex stock index plunged more than 11 percent and benchmark bond yields soared.

“So far, the panic goes on,” Dmitry Dorofeev, a money manager at BCS Financial Group in Moscow, said by e-mail. “The central bank’s decision should help support the ruble in current conditions, but it’s very negative for debt.”
