I'm dipping into this thread again.

In 1980, I was in Romania. At that time things were strained between them and the then USSR. At one point we were that close to the Russian border, we were told not to take any photos whilst we drove past. Why? Because there were Russian tanks in the next field! The road I was on skirted the border.....I took a single photograph and when it was developed it had 3 Russian tanks in it, and that was only in that short moment. The hotel we stayed in later that day, had 2 armed Romanian soldiers with machine guns not riffles on each floor, at the entrance to the hotel and walking the streets. Who was I with? Were we of any importance....no we were a bunch of 18 year old students.

Heading further into Romania itself, we saw no military at all.

So Russian troops so near...10Km......that's a long way away by comparison to what I saw. It's just the way they do things out East.

it seems exactly that is happening.
in my opinion the most important was/is the speed of actions by Russia/Putin.
Political decisions, military deployments, statements - everything done so fast that "The West" cannot even comprehend the last move and the next move is already being played.

“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”
"He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared. "

Art of War.

exactly.
I was just listening Obma's speech in Brussels - He managed to say nothing again.
empty words...

Based on that info it looks like there are plans to go into Kiev... Well we know NATO won't do jack, I wonder how Poland feels about that though?

Yup, i posted few pages back that it was weird they were deploying near Bryansk, that is at the northern most point of the Ukrainian Russian border. Very close to Kiev. I thought Putin had no intention to take Kiev. Only east and south.

This is probably why NATO falls short on Ukraine's cry for help. NATO however can only depend on the EU and US to keep slapping them sanctions on, 'Knowing' that Russia will return the favour.

War is not an option for both sides but when you have a pack of hungry nasty hounds on leases ready to be cut free and make hell fire I'm sure Ukraine has military protocols to follow in the event of further invasion.

If he invade Kiev that will be the start of at least big regional war in Europe. Then WW3 will be so cloooooooose.

There is something different about President Obama's speech. He is pretty much killing Vladimir Putin's argument for going into Crimea and Putin's anti-West agenda. I've listened to many of Obama's speeches but this one just sounds so different, as if he's talking with conviction! I wonder if Putin will respond in kind?!

quite the opposite, Obama's speech is nothing extraordinary; he is just repeating same old phrases with no real substance.
seems pretty much out of the touch with the reality.
just a same old Obama; this time with even more Obama "es" than usual; like he is nervous.
Putin got him by the balls.

I do not think most of us if anyone besides those closest to Putin knows what he is thinking or planning... Personally it is fairly clear to me that the USA is gonna keep it's mighty military in check regardless of what happens to the Ukraine.

I agree with you unless Putin steps into a NATO country.

This is not about Obama it is about the Ukraine. Can't the rabid haters of Obama leave just one single thread alone here? I am not a fan but not everything on ATS needs to feature the haters constant opinions of him. It gets freaking old and I have walked away from more than a few threads when it happens....

If this is true this pretty much confirms what most of us are thinking. An invasion into Eastern Ukraine looks highly likely. There are also reports of tanks and other Russian vehicles heading North from Simferopol in Crimea. From the looks of how Russia are positioning their military they could invade from Moldova, Crimea and on the borders so they may take the whole of South Eastern Ukraine.

Kiev is so close; if they move in they will take the whole country.
Ukraine is in a very bad situation; whatever they do will be wrong.

The thing which is most interesting about Russia's military movements is that they have effectively deployed resources all along the Ukraine-Russia border, in Crimea and they have troops stationed in Moldova. It makes you think just how long they have been planning this invasion for. I'll give him his due, Vladimir Putin is a smart man.

I think it would take nothing less than a push into a NATO Country to get anything more than a verbal/economic response. I am glad for that. The USA needs to stay it's hand until a NATO country gets hit. Then? I guess it's time for WW3.....

you're right; it's about Ukraine, and guess what? Obama just delivered a speech and he was also talking about Ukraine: imagine that.
so I'm not criticizing Obama for being Obama, I am replying to a poster who characterized Obama's speech in a way that I don't agree with from what I heard and saw.
OK?

Logically that is never going to happen though.. do you agree?
because this, like all conflicts is about playing poker for the what ever
pot is up for grabs.. bringing the house down to claim your prize is against the
interest of all players.. So unless someone is insane or makes a massive miscalculation
WWIII is not going to come along anytime soon. IMHO
