Contextually Targeted Advertising on AboveTopSecret.com

Social content and user-generated content websites have become the latest online "rage" for users and advertisers alike. But in many cases, it can be difficult for media planners to design an appropriate strategy for these sites that best suit their clients. To help advertisers and marketers take advantage of social content, we've developed a suite of advertising products, including our unique Ad Above Package, as well as the new "WordAbove" program of contextually targeted ads inserted into the flow of a discussion.

The "WordAbove" Ad Unit

Social content sites such as discussion boards and popular multi-user blogs are unlike any other website. The content pages can often be very tall, filled with thousands of words of important copy, contain multiple viewpoints, and are very often read top-to-bottom by regular users and casual visitors alike. While traditional banner "wrapping" at the perimeter of the content can still be an important component in the advertiser's toolbox, very often these are either not relevant or can be missed by the user who is captivated by the content. Our "WordAbove" solution provides a contextually targeted way to insert non-intrusive relevant advertising into the flow of a discussion.

How It Works

The idea is simple and illustrated by the two examples shown at right. Our technology scans the more than 3.6 million posts throughout all the topics on our site, and delivers targeted ads in-between the posts of a discussion thread. The system is robust and allows for:

  • Any type of text, HTML, graphic, or rich media ads delivered by our banner server, complete with impression and click-through reporting.
  • Any type of ad delivered by your banner server to fit within your existing campaigns.
  • Expanding ads (from user click-action) delivered by our banner server.

Your campaign can make use of multiple keywords or phrases for broad targeting, or finely-focused words for highly relevant placement within specific discussions. The system enables advertisers select a range of options that can be as fine-tuned as dynamic text ads with targeted keywords in the ads, or as broad as one banner for dozens of keywords.

Organic Search Targeting

An important advantage with this advertising program is the ability for advertisers to "piggy back" on AboveTopSecret.com's legendary search engine performance. As shown in our statistics, the site regularly experiences more than 850,000 visits from organic search on over 320,000 distinct keywords and phrases. And thanks to our advanced SEO tactics, important current event discussions are included in the Google index within hours. Advertisers will have the opportunity to review highly popular search keywords and reserve WordAbove exclusivity for the duration of their campaign.

The recommended ad unit is a custom-sized 800x40 pixel banner that fits well within the flow of discussion without being disruptive or intrusive. While we can accommodate IAB standard sizes of 468x60 or 728x90 for these unites, we don't recommend it. If needed, our graphic design staff can work with your agency or designers to modify your existing assets to fit the recommended size.

WordAbove Media Costs

The cost for developing a WordAbove campaign varies by keyword and ad types. Generally there is a minor fee for establishing the campaign, then impression charges based on the popularity of your chosen keywords or phrases. Our executive staff includes seasons advertising and sales professionals who can work with your media planners to devise an effective and stand-out campaign that fits within nearly any budget.
