WASHINGTON (AP) The top American commander in Afghanistan said Tuesday he has no evidence Osama bin Laden is in day-to-day control of al-Qaeda but suggested the long-absent terrorist leader is alive.

Lt. Gen. David Barno, speaking to reporters during a visit to the Pentagon, talked mostly of a lack of evidence about bin Laden's whereabouts, health and current role in the al-Qaeda network. He remains, however, a critical target, Barno said.

Still, "I don't see any indications that he is in day-to-day command and control, as it were, of the al-Qaeda organization or the other terrorist groups that work with him, certainly in the Afghanistan-Pakistan area," Barno said.

Barno suggested that bin Laden's death would be difficult to conceal from intelligence services, even if he died in a secret place, because his associates would talk about it. Recent communications from al-Qaeda's top echelon have come from bin Laden's chief deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, as videotaped messages.

Dead or Alive?

If the top commander in Afghanistan believes that Bin Laden is indeed alive perhaps he knows more than we will ever see.

If true, Is bin Laden now so weakened and out of control of his Al-Qaeda terrorist group that he is irrelevant?

Only time will tell.

2 weeks before elections, of course he is alive now and weakened.

You'll be seeing him on the news in the next week. Captured

No, I see it different, the reason of keeping bin-laden alive is so the terror alerts will be more meaningful, as to keep the population on the edge.

I would have to agree with that 100% but now there is a new Bin Laden and he chops heads off.

If they had him, now would be a good time to bring him out!!

Really I don't believe there will be any "capture" of Bin Laden before the election.

But then again this is an election year, Maybe if things get too tight near the end the Bush Admin. could say... Vote for us or we'll let him go!

Were they previously stating that he was dead? When it comes to what the government says...I don't believe a word of it!

I thought they were going to capture him in the beginning of the month. I think if they capture him right before elections it may raise a few eyebrows.

After the capture of Saddam Hussein the sharp buzz in his approval rating was really short lived. If he brought Osama out in early October the spike in approval rating would have dropped its current state (under 50%) by election day. I see it as a matter of about 4 days before election day...like the 28th or 29th.

My gut feeling says that they wont "get him" in time for the elections, it would look way too out of place... or should I say deliberate.

In March of 2003 at a press conference, President Bush stated that he didn't know where he was and he would repeat what he had already stated that he wasn't quite concerned or worried about Bin Laden.

A man that plotted and successfully fulfilled plan to fly planes into the WTC and Pentagon killing thousands of people he isn't worried about. Oh Yeah, we shouldn't elect him again this time either.

Osama is probably being allowed to escape and live free, wherever he is, by the Intelligence services. Probably still providing motivation to future terrorists in the Pakistan/Afghanistan mountains, with American dollars funelled through ISI and the CIA.

If not, he is just left alone because he has too much information regarding the CIA and because of his family connection to the Bush family and regime in the United States.

Yeah...I'm certainly feelin' ya on those comments IMMORTAL.....not.
Let me see, the US goes after OBL, the Taliban is thumped out of control in Afghanistan, the US continues to spend BILLIONS looking for OBL but the US doesn't want to capture him because he holds too many incriminating secrets cercerning the CIA and parts of the US government, including the so-called Bush Dynasty?

O.......k.......

Ever crossed anyones mind that OBL is dead?
Seen him holding a dated newspaper yet?
IMHO, till I see such indications that he is indeed alive and on the so-called 'run'....Star Trek and the Doctor sum it up quite nicely for me:

He's DEAD Jim....he's dead...

ToraBora timedate.

You really think that the US was going after Bin Laden after 9/11? By your response, that is apparent. Did you know that Bin Laden is actually not the mastermind of 9/11? I think he did not provide the funding for a terrorist attack such as 9/11. All the money was most likely funded by the US with CIA and ISI responsibility to carry out such a notorious operation. That Mohammed Atta guy, one of the supposed hi-jackers at 9/11, received money from the ISI General who was visiting some high officials in the United States. This ISI person was visiting the US at the time 9/11 happened. This was all exposed by Indian Intelligence services.

If the US is speding Billions to look for Osama, then it is a waste of Billions of dollars when the President just has to call the CIA office to get Osama's whereabouts.

Like many Intel agencies will report today, Osama is still alive and kicking because he is still much an asset of the CIA and its counterparts.

Did you know that about half of the supposed hijackers have been proven to be alive according to foreign embassies? None of the supposed hijackers were on the passenger lists. I smell rat. I smell that 9/11 was developed, funded, and carried out by Bush and his regime.
