In what could be seen as a victory for free speech advocates today the Supreme Court ended it's session with a ruling against Internet porn laws
intended to protect children from pornography. The margin was by a 5-4 vote which does indicate a divided court...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked enforcement of a law intended to protect children from pornography on the Internet, saying the law probably violates free-speech guarantees.
By a 5-4 vote, the high court said 1998 legislation "likely violates the First Amendment."
The court ordered parties from both sides to reconsider the issue in a lower-court trial. The ruling gives the Bush administration a chance to prove the law does not violate free-speech rights.

There are many millions who view pornography on the internet everyday. This demand has created a web of porn sites that seem to be everywhere anyone goes online. And the internet was in thought meant to be the information super highway. But it has for many ended up being a road into the red light district of the cyber world.
Children can and do get online and there is always the possibility that unsupervised web surfing can lead an unprotected child into the world of cyber pornography.
Free Speech should always be protected and parents should protect their children not the government. Or so today's ruling would indicate.

Since I am not a parent who has had their children exposed to such material (I am not even a parent at all for that matter), I am not upset by this.
If I had children who had accidently fallen into the web-porn pit, I would probably be outraged. Guess it is a hard one to call, as the courts ruling
shows; 5-4.
