Internet filter gets green light

news.ninemsn.com.au

The federal government is pushing ahead with its controversial plan to filter the internet, saying illegal material can be blocked "with 100 per cent accuracy and negligible impact on internet speed".

Labor will introduce legislation next year requiring all service providers to ban "refused classification" material hosted on overseas servers.

I had hopes that this would have failed at the trail period...turns out it hasn't.

What's stupid about this is it so easy to get around any kind of filter, the one the government wants to implement is no different. So the people who they say it's designed to stop won't be stopped, in fact it will drive them further underground hiding behind proxy servers and the like.

I hope this gets blocked in the senate next year.

I hope it fails miserably. I'd hate for them to think this is successful. Though even if it is not, they will still say it's good.

The part that irritates me is them saying it works 100% with little to no impact on speed. This can't possibly be true, no prohibition or censorship has ever worked at 100% efficiency, and the fact that they mention speed leads me to believe it will of course slow the internet down.

I almost hate to point this out, but this thread got the jump on the news before you...By more than an hour. Although I have to admit, the linked sources are different.

I wonder when they will start to try this in America. I'm not sure how people will respond. And to Chadwickus, why wouldn't you guys just raise hell over there. Can your Government really ignore the will of the people if they are locked in their office during riots afraid to get killed by the mob.

Works on the masses, that's what counts. Filter tech isn't hard to break as mentioned. Another big brother bill rammed down another countries throat again, new zealand is next with search and surveillance bill.

Ah well unless people make a huge noise govts don't listen...

It's odd, Telstra, who are Australias biggest telco first trashed this filter some months ago, saying it would slow speeds dramatically but now it seems they and Optus (second largest telco) both are saying it won't effect the speed.

Another oddity is the roll out of a new high speed broadband system being introduced by the government, maybe they plan to install super fast internet then filter it which will drop it down to normal speeds?

Either way, it's a stupid move.

All good, ATS allows two consecutive threads going providing they're in different forums.

There have been marches on most state parliaments, online petitions, letters etc etc.

NO CLEAN FEED have been at the forefront of all this and I would hope they step things up now that the government is going ahead with the filter.

I am sorry to hear about this Chad.

I hope you guys can yell loud enough at your politicians to get them to back down.

There are far better ways to prevent "internet crime" than by censoring millions of customers who never do criminal activity

Good luck getting this overturned.

I hope you don't take my earlier post as a complaint...It was merely an observation. I included a link to the other thread so that info & comments may consolidate information. I wasn't seeking to have anything "cut out."

I even provided a link from there to here, just to be fair-minded about it.

Besides, I try to avoid arguing with people who have adamantium claws...

Actually, I heard the complete opposite from a 'friend' that is very high up in the federal police today. He told me that the web filter is definitely NOT going to go ahead. Go figure!

I'm confused now!

Hiya buddy!

Very interesting bit of information that is.

I would assume the feds would have quite a bit of involvement in implementing the filter.

Did he say why it won't go ahead?

He didn't go into detail but from what I did understand, something important happened today (Tuesday 15th Dec).

... anyway, time will tell.

Give them an inch and they will take a mile.

What happens when a particular news site becomes "harmful"? And what if you do want to look at porn all day? Last time I looked, porn is legal as long as the subjects are over 18.

The problem with censorship --any kind of censorship -- is that it only gets tighter as time goes on. They start with porn, and then slowly but surely the list of what's "approved" or "disapproved" evolves and grows.

I will never support censorship of any kind. I'm a parent, and if I alone can not mandate and control what goes on in my house then it doesn't get controlled -- I certainly don't need the government telling ME what is and is not appropriate.

Does anyone know where this has been tried out in the UK and on which ISPs? I've recently noticed that my connection is very slow (only loading pages, but not downloads) and many pages won't load at all. I've been living with it for the mo, because I'm working on computers all day at work, so can't really be bothered when I get home, but I've been assuming it was a simple browser problem.

Others in the area have mentioned similar probs.

I'm on Virgin broadband in the West Mids if anyone might know whether these are connected or whether I just need to re-install my browser.

[Edit to add] I think it's about time I look for the old proxy list. It's in a drawer somewhere...
