NEWS: Paris Riots Spread To Twenty Suburbs

Teenage violence is spreading rapidly across troubled suburbs around Paris in an eighth straight night of violence as police clashed with angry youths and dozens of vehicles were torched in at least nine towns, officials said today. Youths also threw Molotov cocktails at an annex to a town hall and threw stones at the fire station, while police responded using rubber bullets to deter the violence.



Yesterday President Jacques Chirac appealed to the gangs to stop the violence but apparently his call went unheard. One would think that after 8 days of violence with all this violence spreading that the French Police would use something better then rubber bullets to stop these thugs.

This is beyond belief that the police cannot stop the violence from getting worse :shk:

Shots, think of it like this.

Those people have firearms.

If the Police begin to use live ammunition you will have a blood bath, something which is worse than what we have right now and something I doubt either of us would want.

I say use gas of them or tranq darts...which would be rather amusing.

Interestingly enough...such riots do not improve the poor conditions, and this is ultimately self-defeating... Like most such riots, the true root is probably elsewhere, and this is simply an excuse to unleash some pent-up frustration over something else (such as the Parisian youth's general hatred of the French government)....

I'm sorry, but with firearms also involved, some serious measures will need to be used, just in the interest of public safety...

The riots started last Thursday after the electrocution deaths of two teenagers who ran from a soccer game and hid in a power station in the northeastern suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois after they saw police enter the area. Youths in the neighborhood said police chased the boys to their death.

That's pretty lame. If they weren't guilty, why run? They ran to their deaths, and it was a result of their own stupidity...not the police's actions.

These riots have gone on for way too long. Like Gazrok said it is self destructive, they are burning their own neighborhoods down.

I think they ran because others were running. The thing is, in this case is that the cops didn't chase the kids to their death. The original rioters believed the cops actions killed the kids. This whole thing has blown way out of control. It is all really sad.

I not sure its true, but in one article, it said the youths ran from the cops because they were checking IDs. If they are illeagles,just like we have here, everyone runs. It confuses the cops and the illeagles can get away.

and i have listened to NPR and watched CNN every morning and have seen nothing on this...

are they afraid that riots are contagious if you report them?

I fully support whatever the french police have to do, to instill control... they are allowing more victims of violence and destruction with every minute they hold back their hand...
Of course, being several thousand miles away, we may not have all the facts..

I myself am curious as to why I haven't heard anything about this in the US Media... it makes me wonder what else they aren't telling us?

There are tons of thing you wont hear about in the US corporate media.
Thankfully we have ATSNN to spread stories that 'they' don't.

CNN and other news networks have been doing pretty good coverage of the riots. Though there are a lot of things that are happening here (in our own country) that should and is getting more air time. The Paris riots are not the only thing that should be on the news.

Yowza, they'll be ripping up the coble stone streets next.

I read about this a couple of days ago. The problem has been brewing for 30 years in those sections of Paris. The whole riot seem to have been sparked because a tear gas can was thrown inside a mosque in Paris, and the electrocution from those tweo youths as they were running away from French police.

Some people might say that that incident would be enough for the riots to start, but the violence has been happening there for years.

Here is an article about what has been happening in the poor sections of France. The article is from 2003, but still those things described in that article are still happening to this day.

The violence in those sections of France seems to have been pretty much kept in the quiet, since in this side of the world not much is heard about it.

I think the police, and politicians, in France really need to crack down on all that violence once and for all, or it will get worse, and it is pretty bad already.

We should take a lesson from the French. When the opressed stand up against the opressive powers, it gets noticed. We've become too lazy to care when our rights are trampled.

This seems to actually have a parallel in North America- the riots in the 60's, especially the Watts riots. Same cause, same response.

It's a damn shame- social problems cause criminal behavior, criminal behavior causes police reprisals, police reprisals eventually lead to rioting. Not terribly complicated.

I visited Paris in January of 2001, just after new years. On the train ride from Charles De Gualle airport to Paris and on the ride back I felt incredibly vulnerable and in danger. It is nothing but ghetto, graffiti and slums the whole way. Dillapidated highrise housing projects with a sattelite dish on every balcony. It says tons about the French system. Socialism doesn't solve misery, it just makes it so that we can ALL be miserable together!

That i know of what has been happening in France has not happened in the US, at least not yet.

Girls are getting gang raped just for about anything, and they get raped at about any place. Women have been treated like animals and if the youths think any woman is easy they rape them, repeatedly. There have been cases of young women being killed, included burned alive because the men have seen them as being "easy." Women over there are raped for not wearing a head scarf, for wearing a mini skirt, or even for consenting to sex with their partners, or just for going to clubs.

I haven't seen any evidence that what is happening in those sections of France is happening in the US. Yes, there are rapes in here too, but not in the manner, as violent, or as frequent as it is happening in France.

The BBC has been reporting on it and we get BBC World News at 6pm will see what they report tonight but in live pictures it looks allot like the beginning of the intifada. I wonder how bad the oppression really is as Parisian Police are not know for there gentleness. I'm actually surprised they've held back this long they have the Manpower to end this right now but that would cause further bloodshed. I don't know what I would do in such a situation...

As for your rape issue, it's the different manifestation of a social issue. It's sick, it's horrifying...but then again, so was the crack epidemic. Remember when Crenshaw was a free-fire zone? Young black men dying every day. Reginald Derry. Screwed up living conditions make for screwed up behavior.

The comparison isn't exact. But at least try to follow me on this one. I remember, from this DVD called 'The Real Toronto', there's the kids saying something along the lines of 'The only way out of Scarborough is to be a baller. A baller or a rapper. If you aren't, you gotta deal.'

Now, these immigrants don't have any way out, and scarborough is probably the worst part of Toronto. But that same perception just makes criminal behavior -like dealing drugs or rape- seem more acceptable. And that, like the perception of racism and the reality of intense poverty, is the root cause of these riots, not religion.
