Dec. 5 - Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe that, as the Bible says, Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, without a human father, according to a new NEWSWEEK poll on beliefs about Jesus.

Sixty-seven percent say they believe that the entire story of Christmas�the Virgin Birth, the angelic proclamation to the shepherds, the Star of Bethlehem and the Wise Men from the East�is historically accurate. Twenty-four percent of Americans believe the story of Christmas is a theological invention written to affirm faith in Jesus Christ, the poll shows. In general, say 55 percent of those polled, every word of the Bible is literally accurate. Thirty-eight percent do not believe that about the Bible.

I'm not going to get into debating the bible, but I'd put money on the fact that more than half the people that think it is literally accurate haven't even read it. If they had, the numbers wouldn't be so high.

Edsinger how about you do you believe in a virging birth?

I know a lot of people that still believe that Santa is real.

I've never read the Bible, and I don't take anything it says (or I should say: what I hear it says) literally. I don't know many people who do either, I mus admit I find this somewhat surprising. Even so, so what?

Looks like all those abstenance lectures for the schoolkids have paid off.

In other news 79% of American parents have a virgin daughter who gave birth.

I'd see more hope if you could get those same people to stop drinking, partying, clubbing and doing all the other things that Christians aren't to do, but do anyway.....and the biggest...stop judging others...then there would be hope for us Just because they believe doesn't make it so and probably most of them have no idea about any real history or truth of the bible.......Look at the people that believe in our government, look at the percent of people that believe that all sorts of falsehoods.......you crack me up Ed.....it's never ending LOL

I suspected that for a while but I think he is from that group that are claiming that the man should rule the world while the wives should stay at home bare footed and pregnet, they want to take back their manhood.

It�s funny how in your first sentence you judge all Christians negatively then in your second you call Christians judgmental. Looks like you want something you refuse to give yourself. Let�s try to practice what we preach, you know start with ourselves and work outward. Then there would be hope for us.

I always think it is funny to see people debate what is and what is not possible in this amazing world. Think about it. We are alive. We are living, breathing, thinking, feeling, passionate creatures floating around on a rock in the vastness of space and time. Life itself should not be possible, and yet here we stand and no one has a clue how or why life came to pass. We are the contradiction of the normal. Our lives are the very definition of the impossible made possible. We have become so accustom to the fact that we are alive that we have forgotten that the essence of life is truly itself a miracle. I think most people chose not be believe in things greater than their human senses can interpret because to do anything else would also mean losing control over the illusion of reality that each person creates in their mind. In the end, we are all afraid of the truth.

Well hello Kinglizard. Lets see..... where to start. First off. I don't judge others, or at least I try very hard not to. Yes, there are times with people like Ed that it's hard, at least for me ...the great big, huge, gigantic, difference here, is that I do not profess to be of a faith that tells you not to judge....my faith's main tenet is simply
"an it harm none, do as thou will" this includes even yourself. I try to be a good person simply becasue it's the right thing do for me....Now, right before I read you're little message to me, I was feeling a bit bad for dear Ed because he was just posting something he found that made him happy about his faith...the problem is, to many of us here, is that he has a gazillion posts judging others while he sins himself so yes, I guess we jumped him a bit...just like he does others that defend gays or are not of hid faith!

I want some links on how accurate the history of the virgin birth is,I mean for so many people to "believe it" has to be some real historical facts and perhaps some archaeological "discoveries" that are unknown to us the poor unbelieving rest of the nation.

I have read the Bible through twice. I do believe in the Virgin Birth. I do believe the the Bible was written by men guided by the Holy Spirit.

I understand you are a follower of the Wiccan faith. While judging others may not officially be in your faith it make no sense to me that you would judge all people of the Christian faith while professing your disgust with people that may do the same to yours. So I guess you were just trying to help others to become better Christians? Somehow I don�t exactly buy this explanation. What�s good for the goose is good for the gander.

I know, in the world of polling, that it's supposed to be an accurate sample, but
it just sounds like a poll whipped together to make a splashy headline.

And there you have it! I'm so fed up with Christians here hating gays, hating anyone different than themselves and telling them they are sinning against god when they drink, watch porn blaa, blaa, blaa...how can one tell someone else they are sinning while doing it themselves...it's mind boggling. No..I do not judge others...but yes, I have called out and asked those that are so hate filled and still call themselves loving Christians, how they can sin while hating others for sinning. NO....not all Christians are that way....but there are a lot of them here that I see doing this. We all know who they are...

I hardly consider this seventy nine percent of the entire population on this country and I will call it a very bias poll.

This thread heading is misleading it should be about faith not what the thread starter is trying to show as a fact.

And for LadyV, I did not see anything in her post that is considered judgmental.

She gave her opinion and that was it the same way I did.

Another symptom of what's wrong with the US? I suppose
many of those same people believe in guardian angels,
a just war in Iraq and Bush as a competent leader. If it
is the case, it's more of something to be embarrassed about
than anything else. I think too many people use religion as
a mental escape from ugly, observable realities of human
nature. If so many supposedly devout people would actually
practice what they preach, imagine how different thing would be...
