Just another visible presence to send a message we in the public can't understand. A part of a long (concealed) period in a cold war that has never really ended.
reply to post by ausername

Cold war was the issue of ideology. When Russians realized that their choice was wrong they ditched it. However, west did not help in that. Instead it ratcheted more pressure of all sorts and went on 'Hot War' against the allies of former USSR........Iraq, Libya, Syria and many more.

Cold war was only a 70 year old chapter in the big book of 300+ year old 'geopolitical rivalry' between the AngloSaxon powers and Russians.

In its 1000 year history, Russia has not attacked other countries (might have been 1-2 exceptions). However, to poke nose in the affairs of others is the "Main" trait of the AngloSaxons. There is another power which likes to poke its nose into other's affairs. That power is the Islamic nations or beliefs. They want whole world to become Green and are willing to commit heinous crimes to achieve that goal.

This 'indulging' trait of two major blocks has to change to long term global peace. Hopefully this can be achieved with little loss of progress i.e. without much destruction. After WWII, FDR said "Never Again". Hope his words hold true.

Russia has not attacked other countries? What history are you looking at? Russia as invaded and attacked many many countries and been involved in hundreds of conflicts. In fact their is not a country on its borders that it has not invaded.

The US Navy website - Regional Commands list which ships are underway and which ones are in port. They also list port calls to foreign countries, however the info is 1 to 2 months behind (The latest update is from dec 2013).

Stratfor also tracks US Navy vessels, giving approximate locations / mission type.

As for the topic who cares where Russia places their vessels. We do the same thing, so it should be expected. So long as they are in International waters they can do / go where they want.

My question is this -
Why is it occurring at this moment in time (administration). Is it because Russia is rebuilding their fleet and are wanting to remind the world they used to be a superpower with force projection or are they doing it because they know Obama won't take a stand.

So if a British ship docked in the U.S, the U.S. would have to offer an explanation to the world?

Thought not...

Both??

That is comparing apples to oranges.

They are pushing our buttons while figuring out how to strike us back if we dare an attempt at stopping them with Ukraine. Unlike the other countries we have invaded lately, they can hit US.

Not sure if they are flexing but if they were from what I have seen they don't have the money to support much of a real threat . I would be more incline to believe the trip is a vacation for some high ranking corrupt official on the taxpayers before it being an act of any Military signifigance.

For Russia to play a superpower like USSR, it would be the most foooooooooolish thing or course to mbark upon.

For Russia to secure and safeguard its rights and securities in its "near abroad" sphere is fully justified. More so when issue is not with one country but with the whole alliance.

Respect others and they will return the favor. Russia is second most powerful military in the world, so it deserves more than a respect.

More so, at 10 nukes each, 75% of the alliance members will be rendered "totally out of function" in 30 minutes of time.

Someone should tell Russia that then...

No, really, its not. Using your logic any nation could justify an invasion of another country. Russia can try and play both sides of the street, however its possible to get hit from traffic in both directions.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO so your alliance logic fails as well.

victor7

Respect is earned, not just granted and it is based on actions, not words or threats. Secondly North Korea has one of the largest standing army's in the world. In that case, just as the Soviet Union and now Russia, quantity does not trump quality.
Why should Ukraine respect Russia's actions inside Ukraine? If you are justifying Russian action then there is no reason the west can't invade Iran or Syria. After all they border US / Western ally nations, so the actions of Iran and Syria pose a threat to western allies "near abroad" sphere in the ME.

There is a reason the terminology during the cold war revolved around MAD. Familiarize yourself with it before invoking a nuclear reaction.

Secondly, you fail to take into account that the US has more than just land based ICBM's. Why is that important? See question above regarding MAD.

Seriously, where do you guys get your logic from? All I see from people from former East bloc countries / those that hate the US is there comments about using nuclear weapons. In that area, and its sad I even have to point it out, Russia is not going to use nuclear weapons. At no point has Russia ever threatened to use them since the end of the cold war so I don't understand why you and others constantly invoke that argument.

Russia should respect the national sovereignty of Ukraine. Respect is a 2 way road and until Russia shows it towards Ukraine, why should anyone extend resect to Russia?

US will go nuclear only for itself and NATO. Urkraine is not NATO. Russia attacks Ukraine, things go to UN, Russia and China veto any outside interference. If US still tries then NATO members like Germany and France are the first one's to walk out.

US still persists........Then be prepared for MAD.

US has more to lose than Russia. Life is pretty tough in RusLand anyways.

Logic says, US will go nuclear for its issues like Cuban missiles........not for Ukraine. That would be MADly Foooooooolish !!

Well let us use a little logic here. What we know is an old out of date, barely armed, intelliegence ship that has no military value nor intelligence value against any modern western state has made a port call in Cuba. From that we know it is not a flexing of muscle or show of force because it would be like the US send a tug boat off the coast of China as a show of force. A show of force would require showing some force not an out of date ship. So it is either here for as a gift for the Cubans or to conduct operations against even more out of date forces like say the opposition in Venezuela.

Here is something interesting. The nuclear plant in New Mexico has an incident. What is the WIPP storing?

RSOE Update
A grim "Of Special Importance" (highest classification level) report prepared by the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) circulating in the Kremlin warned that the "potentially catastrophic nuclear event" currently unfolding at the US atomic Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico has prompted the White House to begin pre-staging government forces and equipment in the event a large-scale evacuation is needed. According to this report, the United States Department of Energy WIPP is the world's third deep geological repository (after closure of Germany's Repository for radioactive waste Morsleben and the Schacht Asse II Salt Mine) licensed to permanently dispose of transuranic radioactive waste for 10,000 years that is left from the research and production of nuclear weapons, Whatdoesitmean.com reported. A "highly significant" portion of the nuclear waste being stored at the WIPP, this report continues, was the result of the recently completed 1993 HEU Purchase Agreement between the United States and Russia that saw 500 metric tons of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from nuclear weapons down blended into low-enriched uranium and then sent to America where it was made into fuel for nuclear power plants, and of which US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz stated, "For two decades, one in 10 light bulbs in America has been powered by nuclear material from Russian nuclear warheads."

So why would a Russian warship be docked in a country that the US has an long standing embargo against?

Critical to note, however, this report says, is that the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC), the private American corporation serving as executive agent for the HEU Purchase Agreement, was "deliberately targeted" for elimination by the Obama administration in early 2009 leading to its 16 December 2013 announcement that it had reached an agreement with a majority of its debt holders to file a prearranged and voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in the first quarter of 2014. Federal Security Service (FSB) intelligence experts contributing to this report say the US wanted to eliminate USEC to divert HEU Purchase Agreement uranium for the purpose of reconstituting it to its highly dangerous U-235 level to conduct experiments at the WIPP on what is called nuclear salt-water rockets (NSWR), which is a proposed type of nuclear thermal rocket designed by Robert Zubrin that would be fueled by water bearing dissolved salts of plutonium or U-235. Under tight strictures put upon it by US law, this report says, the White House needed Russia’s HEU Purchase Agreement uranium for these NSWR experiments and which is not reportable. On 5 February, however, this report continues, these NSWR experiments at the WIPP went "horrifically wrong" leading to an explosion and fire at the underground facility, followed by the 14 February "radiological event" that prompted its full evacuation. Of the greatest concern to Russian nuclear experts, this report says, is the US conducting these NSWR experiments at the WIPP facility in the first place as nearly the entire Carlsbad, New Mexico region is in danger of collapsing due to the massive sink holes appearing over these areas vast underground salt domes. (See CNN video news report below)

Thoughts, just now, CNN says the 'Cold War' is heating up!

my friend, Russia is not showing any force here. that old boat is probably delivering medicines for commie castro, nothing else.

like said before, playing superpower again is not in RusLand's best interests, where even today minor things like fast food burgers are still a luxury for common folks.

You can flex your muscles even if they are full of empty air. It's an image thing. Ever heard of a paper tiger? See North Korea and their threats for a particularly striking example.

Sure, except in this case it would be like sending a scrawny over the hill retired weight lifter to flex his muscle as a form of intimidation years past his prime. Not sure that is the image they want to send to the bully in the neighborhood.

I wonder why all of you guys call this ship rusty, junk, etc. It's hull was built about 30 years ago, which is quite ok for a warship. Moreover, it is a spy ship - it's not supposed to fight anyone. This big white bulb is where different reconnaissance equipment is situated. It has probably been upgraded recently, otherwise it would have been decommissioned like other ships of its class. No one would spend billions on a farewell tour of some rusty boat.
