Well, Australia has a blue water NAVY in a blue water mission....
we already have C-130J's and C-17's and AEW&C's and currently have 19 P3-C's.... so the P-8's replace the Orions....

The P-8A is designed for surface and subsurface surveillance. Just like the P-3 currently in use by the Australians. No one is getting shafted.
