We will call it Internet 2.0 - a conglomeration of websites which consists of:

Fast loading web pages with

NO ADS

No pages that have a story with 15 bullet points but they make you open a New Page for Each Point - just so they can spam you with MORE ADS !

No censorship ! for normal stuff like cursing or having a really different viewpoint but of course any sites with understandable objectionable content children should not see will be in it's own category easily locked off by concerned parents.

No Corporate big wigs including google knowing what we search for or seeing their ads everywhere i go. I don't want an internet spammed with commercialization. These things can be done in private forums.

The idea is to create an internet experience that is pleasurable to navigate through, informative and fun. Sure there are browser tools that can help with some of this but the idea is to create a philosophy to help make the internet better as We The People want it.

A network of folks that say We agree there is too much censorship on the net, too much government involvement, too much spammy commercialism.

I believe this could be done with a combination of the right browser and tools and a website to network all who wish to partake. Sure some of you would have to find other ways to make money if your only source is ads but hey thats up to you.

People could create a Internet 2.0 version compliant webpage and host it on their own servers. They still get the traffic but the costumers don't get the headaches.

It could use a browser based app to suggest the websites who are compliant with Internet 2.0 like AOL and Prodigy did back in the 1990's LOL.. see, I remember the internet when it was new before all this stuff came crashing down on us. It was a lot more free and fun until everyone figured out how to turn it into a corporate money making machine.

Anyway. I think it's a start. We'd need to really nail down the Internet 2.0 Manifesto.

When they come to take me away remember anyone who posts here is potentially compliant LOL Your thoughts?

I hate to date myself here...but....my first "new" computer was the Acorn Atom with cassette deck lol.

When us first nerds got our hands on computers we would ring each other up by telephone modem and connect with message boards called BBS's. Not dissimilar to what we have in ATS or other forums...

I have seen where we were, and guess what? The currant model very closely resembles what folks I knew envisioned....mostly from hearing from our military/corporate parents (the ones that bought us computers) talk about the intranet etc.

I don't see the internets really changing much in the future beyond mode of connection going wearable etc, the model is closely tied to how folks like to communicate.

There will always be a back door or a hidden part no matter the mode, it's how some like to communicate as well, so there won't ever be a time when everything is locked down tight....it stagnates growth and the hidden agenda knows this too....

Cheers

I am very with you but how can people make it so?
TV thrived off of ads and commercials and even this site cowers to the ad companies....hence why we can't talk about certain things,it upsets the ad people and disrupts revenue.
See how all that works??

I can't watch commercials on tv and haven't turned mine on in so long I can't even think when the last time was.
Commercials make you feel dumb just by watching them.

Ads on youtube make me scream and not being able to have an ad-blocker here on this site should be a clue that what i am saying is true.
(who really trusts a google ad-blocker anyways hahaha)

Ads created all this BS.

I have a better idea....lets just not watch tv or have internet and choose a more simple life....oh wait, you can't because you need it, just like the people who need the ads to make money.
(again,see how all this works)

But hey...I don't do the fancy phone thing and still have a landline, the tech and the ads go hand in hand.
(hence all the pop ups in the early days and still even today)

Sorry,I am ranting.

I'm all for it

What we need is a new search engine that only lists sites that dont have ads. It could be controlled by user input, by that I mean if x number of people flag a site as not obeying the No ad rule, then it gets removed from the search results.

Well, as soon as you find the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS that you'll need for infrastructure as well as wages for those who are going to build it, let me know.

Till then, the internet as is, isn't going anywhere, and no 'new' internet will pop up either.

You misunderstand. This will be voluntary. People can already use thier own servers. All they need to do is remake the pages which will be smaller in bandwidth anyway and post the link. People would do it. They will give away a little bit of themselves back to help stand up for the rights of all internet citizens. They will always of course have their heavier laden version of the pages.

Maintaining a website with database and even custom configuring a web browser like Firefox with plugins isn't too hard for tons of folks. People will volunteer their time and talents where needed. I'd wish such a venture to be non profit because that just makes sense. Keep it pure and away from corporate influence.

Do I place too much faith in our fellow commercial netizens? This could be a boon for small business too, companies who need a net presence with a unique take they can believe in - after all thats all of You America.

You do realize that 96% of the internet is already the way you describe in your OP?

The dark web is essentially what you want to create.

What makes you think that people would want to give other people access to their private servers, more so than they already do now?

Which is not very much at all.

Well no, you can't run something like that as a hobby. It costs money and it takes time.

I have a server at my house, my server would literally choke and die if I opened it up to even 1% of all the internet traffic currently flowing. I'd need to spend THOUSANDS of dollars on large servers in order to maintain the traffic.

The same would be true for anybody operating a private kind of internet. There's no incentive for anybody to do this as it currently stands.

I'm all OK for altruism and what not, but again, this would cost hundreds of millions of dollars, which is why the internet is compartmentalized the way it is, because Google among others have the capital to maintain the internet the way it is.

The average citizen does not. Nor would they, without significant investment, or advancement in web technology.

Which would also require millions of dollars worth of research.

i think that the current internet is already made in our own image haha (oh diiiss..) but seriously.. doesn't it seem like the nature of the internet DIRECTLY reflects the mindset of the majority? There's a *little* bit of truth and facts, a *little more* original thought and experimentation, much more in the way of people advertising their products and opinions, and then the rest is pornography haha..

I do agree that if we were to CONSCIOUSLY make the internet reflect our DESIRED image.. if that were the case I'm totally on board

What people fail to realize is that we COULD get rid of "service charges" and "ad-space" because providing service for the internet requires no human labor to maintain.. there are not people turning a crank to get that data through the wires.. it is electricity and once people realize that "internet service" and "data" are both pseudo-commodities, I'm sure there will be a revolution of sorts..

but until thennnn..

OK. Then you start. Volunteer. Show us all how it can be done and lead by example. Put as much as your own money as necessary into hosting your own server. Then tell us the URL. It's a great theory, so

Show Me.

That would be awesome if we could! I remember, (back in the day, lol) when I first started using the internet, there were hardly any ads. Only a few youtube videos had ads and those weren't watched. It irritates me that I search for something (like rings) and every ad I see on the side panel (thanks to Google, I guess?) is also rings. Clearly my searches are being retained and then related ads are thrown back out at me, which creeps me out. I think the problem is that there are too many people on the internet now. Maybe a new internet could be pioneered, where people have to take a standard IQ test and mental health test to use it, haha.

The web you are familiar with occupies 19 terabytes of cyberspace. There are an additional 7,500 terabytes of data, known as the "Deep Web", that you have never laid eyes on because it lies beyond the scope of Google or Bing. Try exploring that before you decide to overhaul the internet.

It astounds me how so many people are missing the point of my post.

This could be a grassroots movement that starts small and grows over time. Money is NO object. People can use the resources they Already have. Some people aren't getting that. I don't have the resources so i won't do it alone - best I could do is get a free top level .TK domain, set up a free forum and or database on it. I'm sure some interested partner would supply better.

The thing is The idea itself - a way folks willing, we can take back the internet for ourselves. It won't happen overnight and wont include any websites that do not participate. If Coke a Cola dont wanna make a page thats 2.0 compliant forget about em.

If we don't take steps to make the internet our own, the corporate big wigs will and we will keep losing our rights and privileges. I believe collectively We The People can do this. Lets have a serious discussion about what is possible with the resources folks already have. I'm positive these pages will cost pennies compared to full blown over bandwidth laden pages.

Besides if the project needs money there are tons of ways to get money. People like to donate to good causes. Being non profit means all the cash goes back into the project. Trust me, if folks like and use this thing, it Will Grow - there will be no other alternative like it.

The internet is largely opensource, which means that it isn't supposed to be owned.

How about a completely different internet just for kids? Every time they want to censor, they use kids as an excuse. Why don't they build a whole new censored internet just for kids if they're so worried about it? That way if there are any kids on the adult internet, we say this is not our problem. They have a solution and they aren't using it.

Thats a great idea and can easily be done with my ideas above. Steam does the same thing, offer a browser built into their Steam client that only accesses the Steam website content. No reason one cannot be set up to include all popular children's sites.

People these days are thinking small. They think it costs tons of money to remake the web and that it's only one big huge web thats untouchable. Poppycock. We have the technology today to have many simultaneous internets delivered at the same time which can easily and cheaply be done simply by choosing the content you wish to display wrapped in a shell program. The possibilities are endless.

That argument is no good here. Tell that to the corporate big wigs who make tons of money off us by spamming us with ads. Look at the internet legislation these companies push through to boost their money making abilities for Them, never mind the little guy, We The People.

It may be true one could think of the internet thusly a while back but now so much today, the big wigs for all intents and purposes do Own the internet. I say it's time we took back our internet away from the big wigs. If We the People don't take ownership of our US based Internet now, we may never get another chance and the corporate powers Will own it.

Enough with you.

I planted the seed, why don't you water it? I did begin - now it's your turn. It's not a You Do it thing, it's a Lets do It thing. If your not interested then take off. You are Clearly still not understanding the concept.

Oh, puhlease! Your concept is not difficult to understand. it's not rocket science, but like a lot of "good ideas," it CLEARLY lacks any sense of understanding what it takes to pull it off. It's kind of like saying, "I think it would be an absolutely WONDERFUL idea to colonize Venus! You guys work out the details and spend the money to get it done and let me know when it's ready."

When Jobs and Wozniak thought it would be a good idea to make a low-cost computer for the masses, they didn't just talk about how cool it would be; they did it, and with their own resources. You're acting like Captain Picard and saying, "Make it so!" But the thing is, you don't have the authority or the resources of an entire starship at your disposal.

You're leading from behind, and as such you are going to be waiting a long, long time for your idea to reach fruition, especially given the fact that you won't put any resources in it yourself and seem to think that a couple of half-baked paragraphs are a sufficient blue print for others to be inspired by your thoughts.

Nobody is, and the reaction here should tell you that.
