Mayhem Grips Ukrainian Capital

If anyone else is still up at this time, here's a few more updates. (It's 3:30am where I am). I haven't seen anything too major happen on the livestream for awhile now. Quite a few more protesters have shown up in the last hour or so. The police on the other side of the firewall are in formations, and seem like they're just hanging out at the moment.

Nine Ukrainian police officers died of gunshot wounds in clashes, the Interior Ministry said, as quoted by Itar-Tass.

07:50 GMT:

Radicals are blocking the checkpoints at the Ukrainian border, the country’s border control said, as quoted by Interfax news agency. In particular, about 40 people blocked the road near the Ukrainian-Polish border, placing tires and other objects to interfere with the passing of vehicles.

08:51 GMT:

Radical protesters have announced the mobilization of their forces on the Kiev’s Independence Square, to prepare for new clashes with law enforcement authorities. The radicals demand to “bring to the barricades everything that will burn and can reinforce them,” as quoted by Itar-Tass news agency.

“This is not a rally, this is an organized military confrontation,” the organizers added.

09:16 GMT:

Among those killed in the rioting in Kiev were three employees of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry from the southern Ukrainian Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

Aside from the influx of protesters at the square, it seems the flashbangs, stun grenades, and fireworks have quieted down. Just a lot of smoke covering the area.

This will probably be my last update before I fall asleep.

Not much new at the square. There's been more political talk as of late. The EU is looking at imposing sanctions now, while Russia is railing against the protesters.

Polish PM Donald Tusk has called for sanctions against Ukraine’s government following deadly clashes between police and protesters.

10:13 GMT:

The blood was spilt in Ukraine due to the criminal activity of radical opposition forces, Russia’s Foreign Ministry has said in a statement. Russia demands the opposition leaders stop the bloodshed and immediately renew negotiations with the legitimate government without threats or ultimatums.

10:26 GMT:

European Union foreign ministers will hold an emergency meeting on Ukraine in Brussels on Thursday, an EU official said.

The ministers are expected to discuss imposing sanctions on people responsible for violence and the use of excessive force during protests in Ukraine, which killed at least 25 people. (Reuters)

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovich announced on Thursday, February 20, a day of mourning for those who have died in the Kiev insurgency. The latest reports from Ukraine suggest that 25 people, including nine police officers, have perished in clashes. Over 70 law enforcement officers suffered gunshot wounds. The number of injured in the riots is measured in the hundreds

The police are those on the top half of the picture with their shields held infront of them, and the protesters are in the bottom half. In between them is where the larger firewall was last night. I wouldn't be surprised if that same firewall was re-lit later on today.


ETA - In the picture, there are other formations of police to the left side of the picture and a longer line of protesters, but I wasn't able to get a clear screenshot of the entire line.

I was born and raised in western Ukraine and this situation is both necessary and inevitable in a country plagued by extreme corruption. Most politicians are puppets for the mafia families running the show in the background. The country is also kept on a leash by Russian interests. Most of Ukraine does not particularly like Russia for the atrocities that it has committed (Holodomor, suppression of Ukrainian literature in 1800s, etc,) so the frustration is understandable when we had opportunity to join EU (lesser of two evils sadly) and the puppet president squandered it.

Just my opinion but I am pleased the Ukraine people are standing up to their government. Sad to hear of the deaths but given the severity and the amount of people involved I think the death toll is quite low.

They are showing that the people have the power over the government and that the government do not care what the masses want. When this many people are protesting its safe to say that they are not happy with things. And to see the police acting the way they are proves that they are nothing but mindless power crazed puppets of the government without an opinion or principles of their own. I have no sympathy for the police that are killed or injured they shouldn't be there doing what they are doing. If they had any morals they would turn around and join the people.

I honestly think this kind of thing will happen globally one day and while its a shame it has come to this in the Ukraine I believe it has to come to this globally if we are to stop the leeches from sucking the life and soul out of humanity.

Im almost certain the US (Obama admin) is partly to blame for the protests in Kiev.
Its Syria all over again, Instead of using the chemical weapons and blaming the Syria gov, This time they will harm protesters and blame to Ukraine Gov and police - They would love to tear apart the Ukraine government, This would give them the ability to get a foot in the door, have influence in the country and put Russia in a sticky situation.
This would put the US right on Russia's doorstep and this would leave Russia almost completely surrounded.
Would give them ''Escalation Dominance'' as they say, The ability to wipe out any threatening country while leaving no chance for a retalition.
Libya, Syria, Ukraine - Who's next? Venezuela perhaps?
The US want the whole pie, And leave everyone else fighting for crumbs.

The Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior believes the casualties in the clashes could have been killed by the radicals, because the police do not use fire arms.

"Taking into consideration the nature of the dead civilians’ wounds and also the nature of the weapons, which have been confiscated, we can assume that these wounds were inflicted by violent protesters,” a statement at the Ministry’s website says. “Police officers and interior troops do not use fire arms. Law enforcers are only using non-lethal weapons.”

The EU, NATO leadership and the Obama administration "are neck deep now in a plan to carry out regime change in this extremely important part of Europe, trying to integrate a former Soviet republic into the EU and, of course, into NATO ultimately."

In the cheerleading for protesters coming from Washington, Becker believes the US is fomenting discontent to further its reach into Russia's backyard.

"I think the United States government is playing another dirty game. They're trying to do what they have tried to do for the last 20 years, which is to incorporate all of the former socialist countries in the eastern and central European bloc - those that were aligned with the Soviet Union - into an American-Western-NATO sphere of influence," he said.

I should add - I completley agree with people standing up to the government, having peaceful protests and trying to make a better life for them selves.
However i do not agree with outside influence and agendas leading to innocent deaths.
This can completley destroy a country and make things 10 times worse.

Lviv just declared independence from the rest of the country.

The events in the Ukraine continue to deteriorate. Moments ago Lawmakers in Ukraine’s Lviv region, declared independence after backers evicted appointed governor overnight. Lviv’s parliament formed executive committee with department heads in Governor Oleh Salo’s administration that will take over functions of regional government, Oksana Dmetryv, a spokeswoman for Speaker Petro Kolodiy, said today by phone from Lviv. Protesters also seized headquarters of security services in Lviv, a region of 2.5 million people bordering Poland. Elsewhere, there were reports of more military vehicles crossing through Kiev: if there are any more Molotov Cocktail video follow ups we will be sure to capture them.

Ukraine Region Declares Independence

The country just being pulled apart by east and west proxy politics.

I just ask that everyone remember that all people who died in Ukraine were ended by politicians
on both sides who just see us all as objects in the power games they play.

After years of negotiations the EU association agreement in last November President Yanukovych turned the deal down in favour of Russian deal which was worth of billions of dollars as a road to Russian loan bailout. So deal with EU went off and pro EU and opposition was not glad about it. People rioted.

Yanukovych rules the country with his close cabinet, over half of ministers are from same region as President. Favourism of Donbas people has been shown in many cases and over 46% of budgets development and social funds have gone into this one region.
While making sure his own region gets richer he also have made sure he benefits too. Building a lavish villa for himself and having shadow companies purchasing more properties to his family to making sure his family will be number 1 most powerful and influential in the country


In January Yanukovych signed a new laws against riots with the spice of reducing freedom of speech. This caused other riots.

You propably see similarities of the leaders of Libya and Ukraine as well.

According other sources than RT ( Russia today ) tells us that police is using guns against the protesters. I wouldn´t count on RT as a reliable news source in this issue, it wouldn´t be the first time for RT to have their mouths shut or stories pretold.

This is exactly how Syria war started, deaths on both sides and blaming each other. I think people underestimate Ukrainians support for Russia. I don't believe that all Ukrainians support Russia or all of them want to join EU.
