13 Dead as Mayhem Grips Ukrainian Capital

KIEV, Ukraine — Mayhem gripped the center of the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday evening as riot police officers moved on protesters massed behind barriers raised throughout Independence Square, the focal point of more than two months of protests against President Viktor F. Yanukovych.

As the attack began just before 8 p.m. local time, the police tried to drive two armored personnel carriers through stone-reinforced barriers outside the Khreschatyk Hotel in the square. But they became bogged down and, set upon by protesters wielding rocks and fireworks, burst into flames, apparently trapping the security officers inside and prompting desperate rescue efforts from their colleagues.

Well apparently while much of the world goes on about their business all hell is breaking loose in Kiev. Body count is at or around 13 so far. Do we have members either living there or near there that could chime in?

My heart goes out to those who have lost their lives.

Unfortunately stay tuned. I'm sure there'll be more to come.

Why are they protesting?

I'll admit, so many things going on, I am clueless.

Here is some good background on why this is such a big deal - an easy, fascinating read:

Bravo to these people.

Can't wait to see all the moral crusaders come in here and place blame on the protesters and sympathize with the police.

You push so far, we're going to push back.

Once again, bravo to these people. About time people began say we have had enough, and act upon that sentiment.

I love you fellas across the pond.

Thank you.

So basically the protest is over an encroachment of Russian dominance.

(why does this sound so familiar?)

President of Ukraine is corrupted as is his closest cabinet. Promises has not been kept. Today ( actually yesterday ) when people went back to street was because Parliament was supposed to have a session to recover constitutional law from 2004 which would have minimized the presidential power and give more power to parliament.. something happened , some say it was an act by president and close cabinet that session was cancelled.

Well Ukraine's central bank is not a member of the Bank for International Settlements.

This whole thing could be a classic example of somebody poking both sides.

I bet either "winner" will end up joining.

Are you located there? If so keep us posted and *stay safe*.

According to the linked article, Yanukovych was basically bought off by the Russians and his governing has been pro-Russian, despite the will of the people of Ukraine.

Death toll is rising. 18 dead now, including 7 police officers. All 7 were shot and killed.

7 policemen among 18 killed in Ukraine riots as Kiev city center burns

At least 18 people have been killed in Kiev as the Ukrainian capital plunges back into chaos. Rioters have attacked police, seized buildings, torched vehicles, and burned tires. Seven policemen are among the dead, all of whom died from gunshot wounds.

Lots of the injured in hospitals are in critical condition to, and there's no more room in the hospitals.

At least 11 protesters have been killed in the riots, according to local officials. “As of 11 pm local time 221 people have sought medical attention, 114 of them were hospitalized. There were 11 fatalities,” Ukraine’s Health Ministry said in a statement.

Kiev’s hospitals are unable to handle the large amount of injured people coming in from the streets, TSN reported. There is a waiting list for operation rooms. People are being carried in with various types of injuries. There have been reports of two amputations, punched out eyes, and injured extremities.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has also reported that 135 law enforcers have been taken to hospitals, and 35 are in critical condition.

The death toll is going up pretty fast. It's about 12:45am in Kiev right now, so expect the toll to rise by daylight.

There has been civil unrest for a long time as people of Ukraine would like to join EU but seems like Putin has the President in leetch there and is anti EU.

But it looks very much like a situation that will not end nicely, something about this reminds those riots communist countries had before they broke off from Russia.

Now the news tell us that 18 has died...

Regardless of where this is, or whos money is being spent, this is the actuallity of a war of the people versus the government.

This is the reality of a police state.... coming soon to a country near you!!!!!

I hope the people of Ukraine remain defiant.

No Pasaran!
