I'm not even sure how you guys in other countries are even surviving! If your Cost of Living is medium vs other countries.. are you living on the streets or what ?? !

No, we just do not buy big american gas guzzling cars, (I stupidly had a Jeep Grand Cherokee for a while, had to get rid of it because of how much it cost me in gas), we walk or ride a bike if we can, we don't drive needlessly, use public transport when possible..... You just get used to being conscientious about your consumption.

I think many people underestimate the size of the United States. I remember a graphic of huricane Katrina hitting our gulf coast, France was superimposed on top of the huricane. France fit inside the storm with room to spare. The majority of this country felt no effects from the storm because it never reached them. That's why mass transit is not effective here, our highway system goes to every corner but only high population areas have public transportation.
Here in hoosierville (indiana) gas was $3.55 yesterday, that $.25 more than the day before.

I'm aware of the difference because I am american. I also was born and raised in Los Angeles- where people get in their car to drive next door.

I never wrote anything about "all americans" doing these things.

I go back and forth between the two countries, and the difference in car size is striking.

I also find that we americans will often take a job that is far from our home - whereas in Europe, people just don't do that generally. It doesn't work out to be worth it to drive an hour to work if two thirds of your income go to paying gas.

But more seriously, if you have to get in the car to drive your kid to school, then most french people would be surprised and wonder why you live so far away from schools and commerce. Like in earlier times of american history, people tend to stay close to town so that they can do most things on foot.

In France, people don't live in the isolated areas between cities unless they are farmers, and can support themselves. The population clumps around cities. It's just a different way of living and thinking. I have no doubt americans can and will adjust if the prices get as high as other places in the world.

wow thats cheap. come up to bc you will be paying $1.40 a ltr which is roughly $5.60 a gallon. Americans pay far less then we do, I think its about time that the states have to pay what we pay for gas.

From a canadian point of view I think it is 100% fair. Gas should be the same price EVERYWHERE, why should americans pay less then us even if the gas is made from oil drilled in canada.

The states get our oil, the states get our best wood, the states get our water, the states get our electricity, Its about time that americans pay what we pay.

Are you uneducated?

You realize economics is more complicated than that, right?

What is your minimum wage, what is your average cost of living, what do you pay on average for electricity, water, and food?

Right. So now you start to realize that your $6 a gallon is pretty equivalent to our $3.40 a gallon. You also know that, throughout the US, gas prices vary right? While there are places that have over $5 a gallon, there are also places that have $2.xx a gallon.

You know why this varies? Because of GDP projections and cost of living estimates based on the area. For instance, in Fort Myers Florida, we have gas at ~$3.29, in Imokolee Florida, they have gas down at ~$3.04, in Naples Florida, they have gas up at around ~$3.57.

Oh so, you think the slave labor farm workers down in Imokolee that don't even make minimum wage should have to pay $6.00 a gallon because you do in Canada?

Lets not forget, that economics aside, there are also other figures for gas prices nationally. I don't know like, maybe, the need to have a car in some places? For instance, if you live in NY city, any of the 5 Burroughs, you really don't even need a car, public transportation got you, not only that, but more often than not, having your own car takes longer than walking or riding a bike, or taking a bus with your bike... So things like this will also affect the cost of gas by the gallon.

The entire world is getting retarded -- I don't even know what to do anymore.

It's not a different way of thinking. The people who live out in the boondocks do so because it's the only affordable way to live with ANY IOTA of quality.

Take for instance, those 28sq ft. Manhattan closet apartments, you can have one for 700$, have your toilet right next to your bed, and your microwave sitting on the back of your toilet, or you could have an entire 2700sq ft. split bedroom house with 2 full baths and 3 bedrooms a yard and a patio for the same price in a place like Lehigh Acres Florida.

Do you know why this is? Because as population increases, and people move into cities for convenience, there is less and less space left. So supply and demand kicks in, and the cost per foot of space increases. Try to find me an empty lot to build a home on in Staten Island New York... Oh you can't? Well I can show you empty lots until your sick at looking at dead grass and sand in Cape Coral, Florida.

Cost of living drives people out into the middle of nowhere, as if you could raise an entire family in a closet because it's "Close enough to walk to school."

If you want to standardize what things cost, than you have to standardize how much people make.

I.E. If you want every place in the world to have $3.00 a gallon gas, then their living expenses all over the world, also have to be standardized -- the wages you make, also have to be standardized. No more, my co-worker makes $1.50 an hour less because I'm a smooth talker, no more doctors making millions, no more lawyers making millions, everyone would have to make the same, everyone would have to live the same quality of life. This bull# that me and you have the same job, at the same hierarchy level, work the same hours, but get paid different has got to stop. Are you willing to sacrifice your excess cash?

Oh, no? I didn't think so.

As if man....

They say people are entitled, I say, the people who are not have nots, but are haves, are greedy. When you have all your bills covered, live an extravagant life, and still post $15,000 a month net positive to your bank account, who are you to tell someone who works their entire life away and can only afford to live in a shack that they deserve to pay even more money to get to work?

It's a disease.

You should get to know some of these people struggling and help willingly. That's what a not greedy person with a good heart would do. How many people do this here? Can I see a show of hands?

I'm not talking donating to "Charity" here, I'm talking donating to a real living breathing family. Charity is a for profit scam, that takes a massive amount of overhead which gets vigged off the top before getting handed to the people that need it.

I myself do like my truck, but I find that I drive only when I have to nowadays. I lived in Germany for eight years and have always been amazed at the public transport system that Europe has. Even in the smallest of towns!
Of course, the truck is extremely useful picking up lumber, hay, etc. Can't haul that stuff on public transportation.

A lot of public transportation in the cities here in the US are gambles with your life.

The idea of quality is relative.
Personally, (not being french, myself) I chose to live in "the boondocks". I think the quality of life is tons better here.
My family in law will not visit us here, they find it dirty, smelly (there are livestock around) , scary because of the isolation.
My mother in law is frightened to death of the silence at night.
Besides the obvious plus of keeping the in-laws away,
Their idea of quality is completely different.

Do you know why this is? Because as population increases, and people move into cities for convenience, there is less and less space left. So supply and demand kicks in, and the cost per foot of space increases.

I am familiar with that phenomenon, it is true in Europe as well. It is pretty much true everywhere in the world, but thanks for explaining just in case I was a moron. The price of a tiny apartment in Paris is frightening, just as in Los Angeles - and yet, people pay it. They figure it is worth it, according to their idea of quality. (go figure).

If you want to standardize what things cost, than you have to standardize how much people make.

I never made any suggestion of standardizing costs. I simply meant to offer some hope to americans that life will not come crashing down around their ears. The comment someone else made, asking if people in countries that pay this much live on the streets was representative of what many americans fear as prices raise. i just meant to say, it is possible, we can adapt and survive.

Are you willing to sacrifice your excess cash?

Oh, no? I didn't think so.

I am confused by your aggression towards me. People in the same level position getting paid different wages is pretty in common in a system of individual merit. I do not live in such a system. That is why it is often called "socialism" by americans (though it is not literally and they have a capitalist economy). but much is standardized, and the idea of individual merit is devalued in favor of equality. Both systems have their positive and negative sides to it.

You should get to know some of these people struggling and help willingly.

WTF? I pay my taxes (currently $2000 a month!) and they pay for universal medical care, and the tons of other financial aid people in this country get. The only homeless people here are those who choose and prefer it (with some ideas of liberty at the base). This country has a totally different social net than that of the states.

I have no idea what you have in mind, but it seems rational to learn something about someone BEFORE gong off on them with such accusations, judgements and orders.

I love the politics of class warfare, especially when carried on across an international scale like this. One side points out the outrageous cost at over $5/Gallon in Death Valley, Ca (who is going into Death Valley needing gas? The place earned it's name many times over) and outside the US people are pointing out the outrageous amounts per Liter.

Rather than look around at how paying so much more for so much longer per liter has been getting screwed, it's become about cheering as 'Americans get to pay more'. How does that help anyone when, tomorrow, those who got screwed on the liter price the day before will still be. Nothing changed, let alone improved.

Yet, to be quite blunt, gas in the US was under $1 per gallon the day before 9/11 with oil markets where $30/ Barrel was priceey stuff. Wars have come and gone that we largely agree were staged to start or run for profit of those transnationals that are in positions to influence such things. Supply has been cut back to accomodate lower demand from a depressed world economy, so supply and demand isn't what's quadrupled prices both per pump gallon and per market barrel. Greed Is!

We're so loaded and aimed at each other to take joy in seeing others 'get theirs' that we forget, we're all 'getting ours' in someone's eyes these days while those at the top laugh and make their banks worth of profit from the whole mess.

How about we 'ask not why Americans prices aren't higher...but ask why others prices haven't ALWAYS BEEN LOWER??'.

Just my two cents into what has always struck me as a truly absurd set of positions to debate from, all around.

Wow... okay, I was very insulted and confused by the aggression posted towards me by someone else, but your post maybe helps explain a bit.

I was not, am not, cheering the rising prices in the US. Neither was I confusing liters with gallons.

My loved ones are still there, and I would hate to see them suffer. We also compare prices often, calculating liters versus gallons.

I was hoping to just offer some soothing hope, that the sky might not fall. Since the events of 9 11, however, I repeatedly underestimate the Americans paranoia and exaggerated reactions .
Your government and media have done a great job of convincing you that uour enemies and threat are the normal citizens of other nationalities! It seems to be working well.. Don't look st the man behind the curtain...

I asked a long time ago- one of the biggest reasons is taxes. We pay for medical care, college education, etc.

BTW... I don't mean any hostility and particularly not in the liters and gallons thing. I was seeing that when I was driving a truck into Canada in the 1990's and it was a travesty then.

What was xx cents (under $1 down here) came to a few times that in liter measure equivalent up there ..but because it could post on signs as near the same numbers, for the different measure being used, it didn't look all THAT different. If you had gallon for gallon price, even way back then between the American and Canadian sides of the bridge, I think Canadians would have been up in arms in a hurry and rightfully so.

It seemed to go that way though for places where it was measured in one standard or the other. Almost a quirk of stats, but not really. Similar to the games played with Gas prices always being a number and .99 on the end. I've seen a couple whole shows about the psychology that goes into those little decisions and the money literally spent establishing how and when to play them. It's crazy stuff.

today,
taking into account 3,78 liters in a gallon
Plus conversion of euro to dollar,
Regular unleaded currently costs us $ 7,74 a gallon.

This is not to make fun of americans,
nor is it to cheer their growing costs.
It is to bring about some perspective, and calm people a bit.
It is possible, you will not die.

Don't let them stir you into a frenzy of panic.
It only causes you to become irrational, reactional, and easier to manipulate.
