LOL. I cant wait for the day our government says, "Look, either you stop rioting or we will stop the sun from going round and round."

I bet many people would belive that too. Its very sad and the sheep just eat it up, then get back on their I phone intergalacticinterchangerjuicemaker 71, and play angry birds 57.

Just another testament that U.S. public education is awful. Yet people still want to dump more money into it. 19% of U.S. high graduates can't read. Apparently 25% have no idea about basic astronomy. I plan to put my kids in private school. I would recommend everyone else home school or shell out the dough for private school.

I feel so proud that I am among 48% of the smartest people on Earth.

Who are these idiots, because ut us the only word that describe them, think that the sun revolves around the Earth. Is the Earth flat too? Who are these people and are they allowed to spread their ignorance to their children. I read a Discovery Article on this that says school children this Astrology is a science.

Perhaps I’m expecting too much of the U.S. education system? Perhaps this is just an anomaly; a statistical blip? But then, like the endless deluge of snow that is currently choking the East Coast, another outcome of the same poll appeared on the foggy horizon of scientific illiteracy: The majority of young Americans think astrology is a science

This country used be the for front on technical and scientific discovery. We have put men on the Moon and rovers on Mars, we have traveled to thje deepest parts on the oceans and have sent satellites past Pluto and one that has left our solar system. What has happen to this country.

In fairness to the alarming high numbers with the least understanding of the workings of the solar system possible...we do SPEAK as though the Earth is at the centre.

We say "The sun comes up" in the morning, we refer to the sun "moving through the sky", etc. If someone was completely oblivious to their surroundings, the way we use our language could support their suspicious-peasant-like understanding of the cosmos.

We aren't talking about trains now are we.
If you are unable to see that trains are not the only thing where that idea applies, it's probably pointless to attempt to illuminate your viewpoint further.

Look if you want to be realistic then you need to see this, If the earth is a train first you must know that the trains wheels are constantly wobbling and changing size as it rolls along a track that also wobbles and twists and turns and get wider at some points and narrower at others. Not only that the change in the cargo it carries as it goes along this unstable track.

So you see your train idea does not fit the pattern of the earth, the solar system, the galaxy and the universe because all of these are moving expanding and shrinking and wobbling and rising up and down.

You would be better off using a river as an analogy because rivers constantly change course, they rise and lower, get wider and smaller and create new tributaries but then even then it is not a good one.

The point of the train analogy is that you don't need to be outside the train to determine the velocity of the train. Do you understand this or not?

The train wobbles but the effect on the velocity of the train is not significant.

The wobbles of the Earth are known far better than the wobbles of the train and are described here:

Earth wobble

It's also noteworthy that some of these very wobbles are explainable with a heliocentric model, and not explainable with the geocentric model.

The bigger problem is, how could the sun with 333,000 times the mass of the Earth orbit the Earth? It's well observed that less massive objects orbit more massive objects (for example, all the small moons orbiting Jupiter). We have many observations to support this (including the orbits of the Stereo spacecraft which are impossible to explain in a geocentric model) and to suggest that this wouldn't also apply to the Earth and the sun is to claim some kind of miracle against the observed laws of nature.

I know there are more than just a few. I have seen it posted a couple times on these boards, but what worse is seeing how many starred their ignorance.

The last time I had seen it posted the person was calling everyone dumb for be concerned about the Ice melt of Greenland because of course as they stated "don't you know why it's called Greenland". He showed us.

America is becoming a stupid country. Just watch our reality shows...we suck at science and math but... we're really good at children's beauty pageants, hunting alligators, chopping down trees, buying the contents of storage lockers, hunting ducks, petty arguments with family members and close friends, sun tanning, drinking and making over bars and restaurants so that we can continue to drink more and become more obese, dredging for gold, fishing, crabbing, living in Alaska and shooting guns. I guess we are good at some things! lol

My point was and still stands you will never get a precise answer without being outside the firmament of space. Both models work. The heliocentric design has all planets including earth moving around the Sun. Geocentric has all the planets except for earth moving around the sun, and that heliocentric system as one moving around the earth.

common core education designed to dumb the nation. If you can find a history book from the 50 or 60's you will find that the info in those books and today's history books are vastly different. An agenda has been pushed one of social and financial equity. One of making people dependent on a socialistic styled govt, while the older versions pushed for individual prosperity and where you could pursue happiness based on hard work ethic of capitalism.

You're completely ignoring the points I made, like the STEREO spacecraft. Both models don't work. You can't explain the orbits of the STEREO spacecraft using the geocentric model, but if you'd like to try I'm sure it would be entertaining.

stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov...

STEREO consists of two space-based observatories - one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind.

Now I recently read that it was first discovered that there were moons that circled Jupiter in like 1600. Imagine if that fact was discovered in 1400 instead of 1600 before Columbus sailed to the new world. Would that have been proof enough to the people of the medieval times that the earth was in fact not flat, but round?

I was taught that myth as if it was fact, and maybe you were too. Try to unlearn it.

Myth of the Flat Earth

The myth of the Flat Earth is the modern misconception that the prevailing cosmological view during the Middle Ages saw the Earth as flat, instead of spherical.

During the early Middle Ages, virtually all scholars maintained the spherical viewpoint first expressed by the Ancient Greeks. From at least the 14th century, belief in a flat Earth among the educated was almost nonexistent
