It has been revealed that the Royal Australian Air Force scrambled at least one surveillance aircraft in order to monitor an unannounced Chinese naval
exercise which was conducted closer to Australian territory, than what has ever been witnessed.
The combat simulation, carried out earlier this month, was conducted between Christmas Island and Indonesia, and is thought to be a significant
development due to China flexing its military power in the region.
Legal experts stated that the exercise was legal, and should not be considered a direct hostile act towards Australia. Experts maintain that the
exercise was conducted to portray China's intention of becoming a global naval power, with their actions being inferred to have been directed at the
region overall.
