"special shirt" While I am sure I am not the only one to come up with the concept of the "tin knocker" I actually designed it here, my gf at the time was a computer graphics person and made the stickers. Others took that sticker and made t shirts. I have seen my stickers in Vegas.

Recently for a breast cancer awareness auction some guys made a tin knocker bra...

Now here is where I think you are wrong. We do not believe we are better than anybody else. I kinda understand why you think that, but it is wrong. We don't.

Ridiculous demands and wages. What ridiculous demands? Seriously name some or just repeating what you have heard others say.
Wges.... $50k a year is ridiculous? Sorry if you don't make that. If you make more than that, why call it ridiculous? Only you should make that much?

You are right, nobody owes us anything. A fair days pay for a fair days work.... too much too ask for?

Well I'm gonna have to call you out on that one bud. What trade, what local? Now like every local things are different. The plumber/pipefitters here had 4 holidays paid. They recently gave those up.

Im not saying you are lying, just that for the most part there is no paid time off in the building trades. I was foreman at the Lansing Grand river Cadillac plant and due to the maintenance agreement foreman got guaranteed 40 hours a week.
Maybe your dad was foreman?

Again not saying you are lying but dont have to call it BS

And to all of you that responded that yes the unions are responsible for the 40 hour work week, job safety, overtime pay and such but are obselete as they do nothing for you now, I ask you this....

What has George Washington done for you lately?

You enjoy and celebrate the freedoms he and his men fought and sacrificed for but then admit to enjoying the things the unions have fought and died for but declare us obsolete and ridicule us.

I want to thank all my union brothers and sisters for showing their union pride posting as well as our non union brethren.

I respect all of your views and opinions, even the wrong ones lol....

Unions are like VCR's and record players....For a while they served a purpose, and people saw a benefit from it. Time goes by, things improve, and they are no longer needed. Unions, just like the VCR, are now obsolete.

Show me again how this thuggery didn't cost lots of Seattle area Boeing workers their jobs...

I am sorry that you can't see the thuggish, mafia type of bullying done by unions to squeeze out the average non-union worker in order to secure jobs costing several times more than what someone who is not in the 1% club gets.

Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with people who can make millions more than me and 99% of the rest of us. Good for you! I just don't think that the way the unions bully the little guy out of work is right. But since it benefits you, you won't see how it screws everyone else.

Well, if you are paying a lot of your salary towards union membership and this "representation" only gets you 50 grand a year, then I apologize. I would think that a lifetime of union membership and only 50 grand a year should piss you off. That's the same ballpark as what us lower-middle income earners are in.
Decades of dues for 50 grand...if that's the truth, then I can admit that I am a little misinformed. But that only serves to make my anti-union feelings stronger. You are paying a chunk of your salary to get bent over by the unions for that wage...that really makes me happy that there's not a "Union of Accounting Personnel". Although I wish I could go back to the benefits package I had prior to the ACA.

I guess if you consider around $100 a month in union dues to earn $1000 a week is a large chunk of my salary then I guess I do pay too much.
I said it was no get rich quick scheme.

I just happened to come across an interesting article this morning that reminded me of this thread.

Top Political Donors since 1989

Six of the top ten contributors are Unions and they gave nearly all of their donations to Democrats. Where do you think the Union gets that money from? They don't generate any revenue. They don't sell anything. They take that money from the wages of people who (in large part) are forced to be members.

These are familiar names: AFSCME ($60.6 million), NEA ($53.5 million), IBEW ($44.4 million), UAW ($41.6 million), Carpenters & Joiners ($39.2 million) and SEIU ($38.3 million).

Local 268 representing.

Loud and clear fellow sheetmetal brother.

Ignorance is a driving force in people's opinions on unions.

I was going to type a long reply, but you covered it pretty good.

I'm going to ride it out but I see cloudy skies for us union brothers.

SAG/AFTRA, IATSE here...

Don't worry liejunkie01, there will always a strong union presence; until government bans unions and ushers in a new era of slave workers and takes total control by the mega corporations, using the Walmart model as a template.

There is an alternative....

Hi jj,
Everyone knows that unions joined together to make large contributions. Though, sadly the common worker has little extra money for political donations. Business (small, medium and large) on the other hand always have extra cash to donate to avoid paying tax. So maybe the Dems have a few very large contributors conservative have millions and millions of mid sized contributors that don't make the list.
P.S. I also have to question the validity of any info on the topic coming from "The Washington Examiner".

Wiki Link

"The Washington Examiner is a political journalism publication based in Washington, D.C., that distributes its content via daily online reports and a weekly magazine.[1] It is owned by MediaDC,[2] a subsidiary of Clarity Media Group,[3] which is owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz[4] and which also owns the influential conservative opinion magazine The Weekly Standard.[5] From 2005 to mid-2013, the Examiner published a daily tabloid-sized newspaper, distributed free throughout the Washington, D.C., metro area, largely focused on local news and conservative commentary.[1] The local newspaper ceased publication on June 14, 2013, and its content began to focus exclusively on national politics, switching its print edition from a daily newspaper to a weekly magazine format."
Thanks for your thoughtful post, you made me look stuff up!

Re: Why is it that union supporters can only list things unions accomplished many decades ago, but nothing recently?

Hint: It's because the time and place for unions has long since passed.

Response- Well in Philly yesterday we see what unions are achieving recently- one of the largest union bosses in Philly, a union city, and his goons all arrested for beating non-union workers who competed with them by bidding on jobs. This group proudly called themselves union THUGS. Also arrested were union members who allegedly burned down a church that had given repair work to non-union contractors.

So you see, unions are still taking care of their own even today, preventing fair competition in the work place, lower costs of goods and services to the public, not to mention near bankrupting government at all levels. US Unions, still contributing after all these years... for the good of all (all in the union that is). And with strong government protection by the Nat. Labor Relations Board who must be proud of the good things unions in Philly are doing even in our age.

Good for you. The thing is, most of us don't have hatred for non union workers. You make good money doing what you enjoy, more power too you. There are a lot of non union skilled trades jobs that pay well.

I hear you Man . We All gotta make a Living some way or another , I just happen to Love my Independence more than Money ...

What I don't like is union bashers and especially those with no experience of unions.

As far as work, I've had good years and bad years. And yes I pay dues whether I'm working or not. 43.00 a month. We pay another set of dues when we work. Like 16 a week I think.

It's almost hard to walk away from when I am not working. I made $29,800 in 2 months back in '09. Didn't work the rest of the year. That was a lot of hours doing what I enjoy. There has been a time I was off all year. But you get a job like that and it makes it hard to walk away from. Like I said its no get rich quick scheme.

I dissagree,

The time for unions needing to be stronger is now more than ever.

I have to say that I live a long way from Philly. Our Union does everything by the book and obides the laws.

By the way, we win alot of contracts and beat out alot of non union contractors because we do our work faster, cheaper, and the finished product is high quality work. If what you say is true then all commercial contracts would go to non union contractors.

The really crazy flip side of this story is, there are studies that show non union contractors are bidding just as high as union contractors. Instead of treating the workers right the companies pocket the money. But we don't want to talk about that noe do we?

It's easy to buy into the media blaming the unions, but it seems to be difficult to understand that non union contractors are charging the same amount but pay less with little or no benefits.

It seems to be ok for the non union company to pocket the money but not the unions.

This problem is a global one, now in a global economy we MUST protect all workers rights.
It's the 100th year of the Triangle shirtwaist factory tragedy the prompted recognition of worker's right's. Please watch video in commemoration of the garment factory worker's that lost their lives needlessly.

I have a hard time watching this and not getting terribly angry. Those 123 young women and 23 men who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on March 25, 1911, deserve to be remembered. But we're watching it happen all over again in developing countries that supply Walmart, Gap, and other marketing and retail giants.

At 2:00, you'll see the cascading effects that the fire had on workers' rights and eliminating sweatshops in the United States. But watching it happen all over again in other parts of the world at 3:00 is heartbreaking. It was the same exact circumstances as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, word-for-word. At 4:24, how do they calculate the “value” of a human life? And the images at 6:40 — really? All for a $26 pair of pants?

where do you think the laws covering workers came from?

Maybe political agitators pretending to be evil business owners abusing their workers deliberately created wonderful excuses for laws that would otherwise be seen as excessive and onerous?

Yeah. I know. That's conspiratorial. Couldn't possibly happen! No one uses underhanded tactics to get what they want! Much less those kind-hearted socialists who only want to help everyone!.
