Eleven people died early Sunday in two highway collisions, one in Florida and one in California, caused by drivers going the wrong way, authorities said.

Five people died in the Florida collision and six were killed in California, and investigation continued into whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crashes.

A Ford Expedition SUV traveling south on northbound Interstate 275 in Tampa, Florida, collided head-on with a Hyundai Sonata just after 2 a.m., killing the SUV driver and all four people in the other car, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

A few years ago 5 people died just up ahead of me on the highway due to the same thing. It happens and the fatality numbers are usually very high.

A 'sobering' topic.

The quality of basic driving skills is in decline. That, coupled with an increasing number of travelers on the roads, is a recipe for more of the same.

A guy who worked with my brother fell victim to a drunk on the wrong side of the highway. He was a very promising young man, almost married, good career path, you name it. Now he's broken and wheelchair bound.

The other driver? Walked away without a scratch. Compensation ... none (uninsured). Penalty for her? Probation (she was, admittedly, a very hot young stripper coming home from work). Whodathunkit? Waiting to see if the strip club will go down in the civil action. They knew she drove herself in to work ... and they knew she was expected to consume alcohol with her Johns.

How do you go the wrong way? It's not even possible here. When it happens the police try and figure out what telepathic powers you have to levitate yourself onto the highway going that direction.

Judging from the way people drive id say quite often. You know those signs they arent so important most people just ignore traffic signs and the lights well they're pretty.

We have had a rash of these accidents here in central Ohio over the last several years and the culprits have almost all been illegals that don't/can't read or speak English. Almost always at night. Thankfully we haven't had any lately but there for a while it was becoming unnerving.
