#BREAKING Airliner from Ukraine forced to land in Turkey after hijack attempt: media

www.cnn.com...

Already? Via airplane?

I thought people coming in via Rail would be initial threats, because you cannot possibly guard all hundreds of miles of tracks to Soshi (Since you cannot fly directly into the place)

I thought Turkey was west of Sochi?

It'll be interesting to see the Flight out of Ukraine's original destination.

www.businessinsider.com...

Hope everyone is safe. Western media has been spinning the toothpaste bomb strategy the past few days.

An airliner with 110 passengers on board en route from Ukraine was forced Friday by an F-16 military jet to land in Istanbul after a hijack attempt, media reports said.

A Ukrainian passenger is believed to have demanded that the plane be diverted to Sochi, where the Winter Olympics are taking place, and said there was a bomb on board, the unconfirmed reports said. (Source)

Maybe an attempt to 9/11 the games during the opening ceremonies? Or just a random crackpot.

It's breaking on mainstream television news now. Do you have a bit of flag envy? ATS is often the first place a new breaking news story appears. If you want ALL the details, wait until it's saturated the MSM.

Correction: ATS is often the first place an UNCONFIRMED new "breaking news" story appears.

The MSM often has to confirm the story before reporting, or else they can get in a lot of trouble.

ATS dosn't have to, as if the news is not right, the thread will just get removed.
Therefore people should keep flag trigger finger on hold till there actually is something to report.

I thought Turkey was west of Sochi?

Sochi sits opposite the Turkish coast on the Black Sea. I found a map for helpful context...

Breaking means little to no facts and not the whole picture! The OP is not a mind reader, well I hope not. Thank you OP for bringing this info to ATS. I will be keeping an eye on this one.

I would not have felt comfortable to fly in these times. Best to stay home until the storm has calmed down. During such times like this it is probably many evil plans out walking.

I think we all suspected something might happen.
If it is what it is said to be, then good job catching him/them.

Now it's been foiled, let's hope that is it.

If someone has a bomb, they use it. They don't politely inform you and allow you to land safely.
This is a BS story.

Good point. Sure there is something more to the story.
First reports often sounds doom pornish...

Unless of course they didn't actually have a bomb and it was a mere tactic to get in the cockpit.

Good to see you made up your mind already.

What makes this story a bit more suspect is that the destination of the flight was indeed Istanbul, and first accounts describe it as a *diversion* to Istanbul

BS? Only time will tell *if* the truth is revealed.

(CNN) -- A Pegasus Airlines plane landed at an Istanbul airport Friday after a passenger "said that there was a bomb on board" and wanted the plane to land in Sochi, Russia, the site of the Winter Olympics, said officials with Turkey's Transportation Ministry.
"While the plane was in the air, one of the passengers said that there was a bomb on board and asked the plane to not land in Sabiha Gokcen (in Turkey) but rather to land in Sochi," Transportation Ministry official Habip Soluk said Friday on CNNTurk.

You might be relatively young, but skyjacking does not necessarily mean bomb. "I have a bomb" is a good way to get a flight crew to follow directions. It was relatively common to skyjack a plane this way, divert it, and then sit on a runway somewhere negotiating demands with a plane full of hostages. It made the news, and you can bet your bottom dollar it would be all over the news right now with the Olympic tie-in. That was the MO until 11 Sept 2001 when things took a new twist. Up until that point, if you were skyjacked, the best plan was to sit patiently and wait it out. Now...

Sounds like a good way to set up a diversion now a days, with all the warnings about toothpaste bombs and the obvious unrest around the Ukraine and others nations in that region it makes a great distraction even for the official agencies monitoring it. If you time it just right you could drive a couple of trucks right through a border crossing while orders and alerts are being sent out or even rescinded.

Aljazeera

People are still inside but the pilot called security and gave them a signal that they can enter the plane. There is a translator - a Turkish man near the Ukrainian to calm him down," an airport official told the Reuters news agency. Al Jazeera's Isil Sariyuce, reporting from Istanbul, said that all the passengers were now safe and there were unconfirmed reports in the Turkish media that the man had been taken away. She said that he had announced he had a bomb shortly after take-off. "The cabin crew managed to convince him that they were flying to Sochi but in the meantime they had pressed the alert button," our correspondent said.

This could have been just a random crazy person. The MSM is isn't making a big deal about it all, it's barely a blurb at least so far. I think ATS will make a much bigger deal of this than the MSM will.
