You are NOT uploading other people's (or mice in this case) memories . . . they are replaying the signal which that specific mouse recorded when they initially learned the task. This is interesting yes, but they are in no way saying that they are transferring memories.

They are replaying them, the technology is not at this level yet;

I am sure this sort of tech will be used to better humanity . . . LoL

And you are a perfect kog in there new world order machine.

Really?

Pro-tip: learn to spell.

I'm gathering you meant "cog", and I'd recommend investing in some time discovering the differences and finer points between "there", "their", and "they're".

I'd also recommend investing some time in discovering a little more about transhumanism and post-biological existence.

I'm playing the long game.
Post-biology for me means I can run around naked on the moon, and, since the Universe is really quite amazingly VAST beyond many folks comprehension, once post-biology is practical, and feasible, people like me could and will scatter off this rock, far far far away from anything that could ever be termed "They".

There is no "They", or "TPTB" out in the greater ambiguous vastness of the Universe.

Post biology will trump the fragility and neediness of a biological body and allow those of us that opt for post-biological transhumanism to survive and thrive in the harsh demanding deadly environs of space.
We won't need air, food, and life-support systems.

As far as cogs and slaves to machines go, feel free to stay on this planet, this prison, this rock where there very definitely is all sorts of "THEY" to tell you who what when where and how.

There is no "Government", or "They" out in the stars to tell you what you have to do if you've successfully achieved sustainable, self maintaining post-biology.
Plant your own flag on any rock anywhere and so long as no one else is around, there's no one else around to tell you what or how to do with it or yourself.
If you've the cognitive horsepower and creativity to stick engines on whatever rock you stick a flag on, then, anyone else comes sniffing around your realestate, it's easy enough to get all sorts of gone.

The Universe is a big place.

That's a question that I also ask myself. Guess what it boils down to is are we more than the sum of our parts/memories?

I would like to think so, which is why i also raised the point of whether it would be morally correct to even attempt said experiment.

That being said, it wont stop us from trying!

Yes, and that I suppose is my greatest fear, and the final, forgive my wording, Satanic trap. To finally rid this world of the ever present spirit that stands in the way of total control over this dominion, this firmament.

Though we might not understand, or for some, not accept, "We", already have immortality, of our souls. It may be the reason our physical bodies come with a "Shelf Life" in the first place. We, could never appreciate the gift we are given, if it went on forever. We would also loose the gift of empathy. God help us.

The title specifically says it's now possible, meaning that this discovery proves it can be feasible and that we are one step further into this reality. It could take a couple of years or decades but in the end reality is stranger than fiction.

If it leads to us getting off this rock we can leave behind any biblical deities(existence subject to proof) who are fighting over control of our souls/planet!

As someone else said the universe is a big place!

I don't think that's in the karmic game plan all the same, we are here to learn something methinks!

I can just imagine what this can do for education.

Imagine being able to upload necessary information in order to learn a paricular skill. After that all it would take is hands on training in order to make it muscle memory and you're good to go. You can pretty much apply this to almost any discipline that can be learned.

not gonna happen.
it's just a carrot on a stick so we give them the go-ahead to research how to mess with our heads more.
just like in the 60's and 70's they said computers and robots would free us all and give us a wonderful life of leisure.

If it comes to this that would be greatly remarkable considering just how much knowledge could be uploaded in a minute. However, I'm not so sure it might be a good idea knowing it wouldn't require any efforts whatsoever. What about learning skills and perseverance?

Food for thoughts.

Is that the primary reason, for physical eternal life? To escape? I'm certain it has been achieved already, and, forgotten. So, when do the escapees return to "Save" those still entrapped? Umm, baa haa haa ha.
Sorry, couldn't help it.

Oh yes, really big universe waiting for us to "Populate", of course that is dependent on present occupying populations.

In as far as those "Biblical Deities" (Subject to Proof) are not in a battle over the universe, but in battle for this Solar System. The earth, is the last battle field. "We", were not sent here to abandon our post, but, to fight for it.

Yes, we are here to learn, to be, the masters of our own destiny. "They" (Biblical Deities) are not invincible.

This always reminds me of that old children's book the Giver. One person is selected to receive all the memories, so no one feels pain. Or happiness for that matter.

I already have a method of recording my thoughts and uploading them to another person. It's called "writing."

I'm thinking of a big, red apple that I'm holding in the palm of my hand. Can you see it?

Masters of our own destiny, buddy we all have to meet Mr Class system, its just not true when "They" tell you that you can be anything you want to be!

As to deities, God/Gods are probably not what any of us think, never mind the biblical interpretation.

We are all just global variables in the end, all part of one big algorithm, call it Gaia, call it god, still it would be nice to get off this rock!

Now I thought that was cool.

In the future, you'll upload your memories so your descendants can remember them.

Recently, there has been talk about the existence of memories inside DNA, and now this.

But there's no "this" at all. He's blue-skying, predicting what he thinks might happen one day. The
giveaway here is "in the future". Meaning, "I'm totally guessing that 100 years from now we might
be able to do this"

eta: Thinking of thoughts as a "signal" you can record is misleading. I can sit outside a football stadium
and record the crowd noise, but replaying the crowd noise at the stadium, no matter how well recorded,
will not recreate thousands of discussions in the appropriate seats and down on the field. "Thoughts" are
incredibly complex events involving millions of neurons and multiple processing centers in your brain. You can't just record EEG levels and play them back into a brain and thus implant thoughts. Worse, while brains follow a general bauplan and are similar, no two are exactly alike. Even if you had a way to record the internal activity of individual neurons (and it would take massive, perfect nanotech) the same neurons wouldn't exist in some other individual, so merely adjusting the firing weights of neurons in the general vicinity to match might not cause the same "thought", it would likely be random noise. Any time you get a guy selling a book based on putative future discoveries, it's going to be as dramatic and scary as he can make it. That's not physics, it's showmanship.

When it comes to movies can we say Johnny Numonic and Ghost In The Shell. Both had this type of tech in them but Ghost In The Shell was rather dark in its portrayal of it. This tech is much further along than they let on. When they mention it to the public, it is already 20-30 years behind what the gov/mil have. This will not end well.

The guy just saw total recall

We are nothing more than organic machines, some day we will be able to turn off the auto on most functions and control it at will

What price, I wonder, do you think we will pay to be able to do that, really? I see these threads about the most amazing (possibly) things, and everyone having gooey eyed, I'll be a superhero, supermodel kind of reaction…..and wonder….

There's always a price. I wish it weren't so, but this is where we are and how it is. We definitively are something more than organic machines, but that's what we've been reduced to of late……is it a good thing or a bad thing? Depends, I guess, on where you're sitting. But Hal didn't make it easy for Dave, did he? Did he allow Dave to survive or control his survival?

Never mind.
Tetra50

Be well. I hope the best for you, whaever happens.

Not sure if this is a good or bad idea.

I can see governments exploiting this to their needs by interpreting thoughts that match their agenda much like that Tom Cruise movie!

When a person no longer has privacy of their own thoughts, we become total slaves to the system.
