I suspect they were grasping, and trying not to panic people. Most likely, he had an infection that caused inflammation in his brain and an underlying asymptomatic previously 'benign' prion infection went nuts.

Oddly, that's not true. Research has shown -conclusively- that brain plasticity can even overcome the physical effects of Alzheimer's disease, holes and all. Bottom line: Use it or lose it.
