Early prototypes are always like that, even the F22 was. Later iterations of the T-50 and Chinese stuff will be more to western standards in terms of skin stealth refinements. Look at the latest version of China's J-20 compared to the first prototype and you'll see what I mean.

That's not to say the T-50 will be as smooth as a baby's back side, Russian hardware always seams to be a little rough around the edges compared to western hardware.

The T-50 doesn't and didn't have actual canards. They are retractable LEX panels.

Exactly. What everyone is overlooking is that the AL;41 is not meant for the T-50. All the performance issues stem directly from that.

As for reliability, just look at our stealth fleet. At any given time there are between three and five B-2s available out of 20 now that Spirit of Washington is back. They have had twenty years and only hit the mid 70% mission capable if they are lucky.

Stealth and reliable high tech. are tricky things indeed.

Imagine what it could do with a couple of F119's....or maybe with that "new" system.

I just meant canards in general. I always liked them on earlier SUs

With the advances in flight controls and aerodynamics, added to TVR they are just added weight and complexity.

Not to mention unstealthy. And vectored thrust works great...
But they look cool.
