Well these so called "shootings" are very sensationalized and focused on.

Did you know that an average of 22 black people are murdered every day in the US by other black people....all but 2 or 3 with firearms... and all but 2 or 3 gang related...

That's ~8000 a year and represents the lion's share of the 11000-12000 firearm related deaths in the USA every year. Why is nobody covering this? Why isn't the media fixated on these horrible statistics? Why isn't there any attention to try and remedy this? No, we must focus on the crazed individual who kills in public places because it fits the anti-gun narrative.

This is madness.

True. People have always had guns but when I was growing up we didn't have all these random shootings all the time. People are losing it.

Yep. They are losing it.. social disease of a new kind I guess. Like the other poster said with the antidepressants and meds.. take a person with this "social disease" and pump them full of drugs... well, the perfect time bomb.

This is insane!!! I was just here with my kids last night!!! We were supposed to go today to get my son some shoes but we decided to go last night instead.

Oh, don't worry about it.

See:

No firearms or illegal weapons
Mall of Columbia Code of Conduct

Those signs taped to windows and doors are like force fields.

Horrible news
My condolences go to the families and friends of those killed, hurt, or permanently maimed.

About 5 months ago, I was at Countryside mall here in Clearwater. Next thing I realize people are being ushered out of the mall in large groups. Lots of cops and security officers start to appear in my range of view. We are told to leave the mall right away.
I ask, "what is going on?"
"You need to please get out of here, and remain calm."

Without further questions, I grab my moms arm, and she is going to argue with the officer.
Time to leave. In this day and age, best to just get out before people start to panic and yeah. We never did find out why everyone had to leave. NO shooting on the news later that night. All the same, we live in a dangerous world. Full of CRAZY people, that can use anything for a weapon.
So before we made this thread about "take the guns BS." Let us remember people died. And that is a sad shame.

People who are mentally ill are capable of much destruction and death, given a simple fork and knife. A crazy person with a rock they pick up from the ground can be a dangerous thing. We need to address these people who are ill, and get to the base roots of what brought them to this point. The reasons are many, and its all based on point of view and place in time/space.

I know right! I can't believe it man....I was supposed to be there with my kids but my gf suggested we go last night. That could have easily been my son and daughter. I am in shock right now. Hugging my kids a little tighter today.

Someone in the other thread tried to say this was not a MASS shooting.. YES IT IS mass means plural more than one.

One person murdered is a homicide, two person killed is a double homicide, three people killed is a massacre.
Plus we do not know how many more people are injured or if there are more people dead yet.

If you're going to nitpick, don't do it where it can be tossed back at ya. The definition of mass murder is to mean many people are killed, not a couple. That's where the phrases "double murder", "triple homicide" come in. Technically, and as far as I can glean from news reports, since the shooter was killed, they killed 2 people before being killed themselves. Ergo, the shooter committed a double homicide at this point, not mass murder. Back off the overdone sensationalism by a lot, will you? You come off a uber-creepy here with your insistence.

All of the shootings lately are getting tiresome. This isn't a result of video games or movies, it's the result of a shallow, empty society with violence issues. This is what happens when we start shying away from repercussions & consequences for actions (bleep you, 80's & 90's self-esteem movement) Look at the ages of these perps, and look at the eras they grew up in.The Age of Coddled. It backfired, and this self-centered "screw all of you" mentality is the result.

BTW.. Nice to see an old face back on the boards!
Glad you and your family is safe!!!

To cover those statistics would be "racist" so they are not covered. The "crazed individual" who shoots up a mall or school is peanuts to the amount killed in the sense of gangs and ghetto violence.

'Overdone sensationalism' ... pot's and kettles !

I'm sure the dead people in this shooting incident would be so pleased to know there was such debate going on to decide whether sad demise qualifies them as the victims of a 'mass' shooting or just a plain old 'regular' shooting ... get a grip people and stick with the real subject *shakes head and walks away in disbelief

Add to the mix an ever increasing global population, ever increasing violent portralys in the media, and it seems that this type of event will only become more and more commonplace, unfortunately.

These mass shootings are really beginning to be a monthly thing. I don't know how society can stop this from happening.

This is how you stop it from happening--you get antidepressant "mass murder" pills off the market. And you defund the corrupt federal government that has for decades been using false flag terror attacks to convince citizens to relinquish their rights.

Operation Gladio, anyone?

Also a huge problem. A huge problem that is largely ignored for some reason.
There's a lot that needs fixin

Phew. Thanks for that comment. I was the one in the other thread. Just trying to have that OP not overly sensationalize what is an already terrible story, and not to make it sound worse than it already was. I even provided the definitions from the dictionary, which they disputed.

Thanks for making my point. I get really tired sometimes even trying.....!

I guess you have never taken a firearms safety course then, huh?

You are wrong, i have, more than once, but i am not a "hawkeye" and is in no position to carry a gun in public.

But, that is something that trained folks supposed to already know AND practice. Those that do not, are not qualified to carry a firearm IMO.

Even trained folks can miss judge and miss a target, and bullits have a tendency to have a mind on thier own, and can penetrate soft materials and ricochet of harder materials. Having a shoot out in a mall where people are hidding behind plywood counters and plaster walls, is not a good idea.

I didn't try to make a disscusion on this, i was just making a point based on reality not phantasy, reality is cruel.

To me, it's disgraceful that we immediately want to argue about how to name this incident(mass murder, triple homicide ...). Who gives a dam! Lets take the time to think of the victims and their families and not bicker about the wording of a title. How insensitive can you be. This kind of stuff belongs in a rant thread. Let's stick to the real topic, which is a tragedy.

My two cents

UPDATE:

The Howard County Police Department confirmed the deaths on it's Twitter account, and said one of the deceased is the suspected gunman. A police department news release said one subject was located near a gun and ammunition, and is believed to have likely been the shooter. The news release said there have been no reports of shots fired since the body was discovered. Authorities have no confirmed the identities of any people involved and are asking people to stay inside until police can clear them.

Looks like the shooter is one of the deceased.....so far. No names are being released pending what I assume is an investigation and/or notification of the next of kin.

Definitely tragic....regardless of what it's called.

They are saying on the news that a witness stated that the shooter had a shotgun. 18-21 hispanic or light skinned black guy white shirt khaki pants and suspenders.

Such a sad situation.

All these arguments that these nutjobs are just targeting places where there are strict gun laws is bull crap. These cowards are targeting places where they know it will be crowded where they will be able to inflict the maximum amount of damage. They don't give a damn if someone there is armed because they are prepared to die.

The problem goes beyond stupid politics and gun rights, our society is slowly rotting away.

It is indeed a sad state we find ourselves in Muse, and I agree that it has very little to do with politics and gun rights. These cowards and nutjobs as you call them in my opinion are the canaries in the coal mines IMO and the reasoning behind the choice to target malls specifically, is not because they are gathering places only, but that they are gathering places that represent the almost absolute fixation our culture has on the making buying and selling of stuff.

We get an education not to learn but so that we can get a job that will provide stuff, we look for mates that can provide not basic supports for each other but who can provide the most stuff. Our entire global economy has been dedicated to this singular mission and we are now seeing the results of this. We are no longer considered individuals but pieces of the larger machine no longer dedicated to the health of humankind but dedicated to the idea that we must be constant consumers or our entire society will crumble. It is rotten I agree.

Combine this with the idea that the health of our minds is somehow "imaginary" and not a part of a much larger health issue. We seem to have the idea that what we eat, drink and breath has no effect on the workings of our brain chemistry. That we can go on doing this to ourselves and continue to look away from it is quite honestly baffling to me.

These sad canaries have snapped yes and will continue to "snap", not out of nowhere and suddenly but have probably been screaming for help and acknowledgment for quite a long time before they decide to do something like this. Screaming not for themselves really but for all of us. That right there is the saddest part really.
