Yes, in recent years we've seen normal weather morph into extreme weather to boost media ratings. We've seen Meterologists go from trusted professionals to smarmy entertainers.

I do NOT want to see Jim Cantore do pushups in the snow
I do NOT need to know that Stephanie Abrams is tweeting during commercial breaks
Most importantly I do NOT....NOT ...NOT want to wake up with Al's cheesy version of a mini pablum-filled microcosm of NY societal smarminess masquerading as something relevant.

For instance just a couple of weeks ago the term "polar vortex" was recycled from the 70's and the general population warned within an inch of their lives. Surprisingly winters being cold are now mini-ice age doom-porn, the flip side summers being hot are also global warming doom-porn.

What REALLY did it.....just over the top did it!! is the new change of tactics. Instead of just noting the polar vortex will be splitting again and to prepare, the Weather Channel has seemingly backed down and we will now be Alberta-Clippered in series for awhile. So Alberta Clippers are less threatening than the Polar Vortex slid off it's northern cracker again??

firsthandweather.com...

Did they learn NOTHING from the Delrechio debacle??

OK...I "get" that the Weather Channel's management is flopping around scrounging for ratings like a hoarder rooting thru a dumpster. However what happened to professionalism being enough? When did those misguided PTB decide that their viewers would sit idly by as they groomed Rokers replacement, schmoodled the tweet-happy, and the worst mistake EVER ....

Spending 98% if their airtime focused on NYC, Chicago, Philly & DC ???
Ignoring most of the viewers who actually watch TWC.

Feel free to jump in and rack-off !!

I would love to slap all of them that get it wrong or rabble on about something relevant. Or a custard pie in the face that's even better.

I would love a job where I could say anything and not be held accountable for it.
Plus, I would get to guess at my job and have no fear of being right or wrong.

Slapping... some I would like to spank ...

The pervasiveness of "the sheeple must be led" by fear, or coerced by a sense of "fake familiarity" while ALSO being inaccurate 80% of the time is almost "political".

Fortunately some of us still actually look outside before believing what we're told to expect for the day.

This winter's meme of Cantore showing up in your backyard indicating you are DOOMED because he only goes to ground zero was both true and silly. Watching weather personalities squeal "there's all this snow"!! while standing in 2-3 inches was some seriously sad television. Hanging out in road intersections and waiting for a wreck while droning on about "how to drive in snow" was particularly goulish. Major routes nowadays have traffic cams.

I do not need you "braving" the elements for me.

Freezing a an egg to the cement...in 20 min....that was pathetic too. Now I do have to mention tossing boiling water off of balconies never gets old.....

I'd like to slap all of the above mentioned ones just because. My pet peeve this winter is the naming of the storms. Who came up with that stupidity??? Storms that are named after mythological gods???

I only turn the WC on if I want to hear what the weather is going to do, & 90% of the time, there's some "reality crap" going on instead of weather. Aren't there enough of those on 50 other channels? I thought it was just me, but it's nice to know that everybody else isn't going there for entertainment, but to actually check on the weather.

I'd like to shake some of the local newstations' weather men & women together sometimes. First of all, this is Michigan: We get weather at the drop of a hat. You don't need to declare snowmageddon when we're only getting a couple inches. Same with the "Polar Vortex"; yes, it was really, really, cold. The worst I've seen? No. And for the record, I was out shoveling someone's driveway, and walked about a mile to do it - granted, my pant legs were frozen into a bent position, but I didn't get any frostbite.

In fact, I don't think it was even called "Snowmageddon" the one year we got 15 inches - it was called a typical winter.

To go further - why do you have to have someone out there reporting in it? Most news stations have some kind of windows, right? Can't they do like most people do every morning? Get up, stretch, and look out the window . I don't need someone out there on the road telling me that it's bad; chances are, I know that just from looking out the window . Sounds like a great idea: Hey (person), how about we drive you out to (location) in the middle of this storm, before the ploughs come out, so that you can show everyone how cold it is, and how bad the roads are? No other news-team would be brave enough to do that.

PS: If it seems like I'm ranting about snow, it's because I find that the weather forecasters seem to regain some brain power when dealing with severe storms; can't say much about their prediction systems though.
edit on 19/1/2014 by fossilera because: window got excluded

edit on 19/1/2014 by fossilera because: apparently, posting does not like the word "window" followed by a period (.)

Windows are handy fer sure! This is as well....

longjohnindex.ca...

If the roads are bad , I live on a hill and have a front row seat for some seriously bad snow driving. Last year when they used our road as a detour it was a riot no one must have mentioned the springs in the road. The locals all know them, but the just passing thru folks needed winched out of fields and hedges.

I agree, never understood TV weather people, would it not be simpler to just say " hey folks at home, got a window? if so go look out it, that's todays weather.
