So you don't figure the Taliban are fighting to regain functional control of the nation they lost in 2001?

Also..Who is paying their mercenary tab, as you'd describe it? I'm curious on this, as stranger things have sure happened in the world...but it's an approach I'd not really heard suggested as the main driving factor of a group of religious fanatics/zealots.

Of course fanatics are involved in these operations. But they are the product that is sold, not the factory which sells the product. Far less are they the owners of that factory who collect the profits.

Well, as I'd asked.. who do you figure pays their tab as you are describing them as a mercenary army? They were fighting all through the 90's without an American in sight, and likely what caused things to get so messy in the first place over there. We set them up to win against the Soviets, waved them a hopeful goodbye and wished them the best with nothing more to help in the aftermath of long term civil war.

Who should be surprised...when civil war continued raging right to 2001, when the US returned to hook up with the Northern Alliance (the *NON* fanatics we'd supported in the 80's) to obliterate the Taliban after their flat refusal to hand over Bin Laden.

Sure, the war was going to happen anyway, and that was proven well when, in Nov/Dec of 2001, Bin Laden was cornered by a CIA team leading local Northern Alliance forces and told, bluntly, their services were appreciated...no longer needed..and to stand down immediately while U.S. marines moved in to take over the whole thing. It could have ended..right there...but then a war wouldn't have come.

Bottom line tho...the Taliban was fighting before we got there..and they'll be fighting long after we leave. Afghanistan has a history through the ages, quite literally, of fighting as a near way of life. It didn't require any outsiders to add to it ...we just got into a fight that really, wasn't ours and we need to leave.
