Putin: Gays at Olympics Must "Leave Children At Peace"

There is no universal literature that "the gays" will be handing out at the Games; they're not the Moonies for godsake.

There is no "agenda" to make anyone gay. There is a movement to ensure human rights for those who are gay, bisexual and lesbian, young or old.

If one has a religious, moral or ethical problem with gay, bisexual and lesbian activity, then one should not participate in gay, bisexual or lesbian activity.

Saying that another country has the right to do as they wish is fine until the feces lands on your own door-step; for example, Christianity was officially illegal and carried prison sentences and other punishments in the former Soviet Union. Were those laws still in place today, and Putin warned about not pushing Christianity on the young while at the Games, I highly doubt that the cavalier attitudes on display here would be voiced quite so strongly.

*sigh* Pedophilia and homosexuality are not the same, for the humpteen-millionth time for the same reasons as the previous humpteen-million times: (1) a minor cannot legally consent to sexual activity with an adult, (2) sexual activity between consentin adults does not cause harm, while sex with children, animals, and corpses does. (Thought I'd go ahead and cover zoophilia and necrophilia because I'm sure those are on their way to the discussion as well.)

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, considering he was part of the old Soviet KGB. Since he was part of the old Soviet system, his values and beliefs are still ingrained in his thinking. I was always surprised why the Soviet people would have elected someone with such close ties with the old system after the fall of the Soviet Union.

I'd still have the same perspective.

You can't be ethical in doing to someone what they just did to you.

Examples so it's clear.

1. Straight man demands a mass boycott of a homosexual run business because he can't accept his fellow human's right to self determination.

2. Gay man demands a mass boycott of a foreign country because he can't accept that society's right to self determination.

It's the exact same thing, just on different scales. Just because you're on one side instead of the other doesn't make it okay.

Edit: Russian laws have zero effect on US citizens much the same way a bigot's words have zero effect on a homosexual. That's why the freedom of the speech in the US is so important to me. It's only when through action or coercion is someone else infringed does retribution become ethical. Russia isn't invading the US for the sake of telling it what's what.

See, I am usually torn too between a country's sovereignty and the individual's right as a human being on this planet. However, in this case I am firmly on the side of the protesters. This isn't just outlawing homosexuality or "propaganda" material, people's lives are in danger. Back in May there was a young man raped and killed and there are many more similar stories to this one. The safety of people should come first above "offending" a country by stepping in or condemning their actions.

For me there's a watershed between the societal desires of a country to not expose children to homosexuality, or sexuality of any kind for that matter, before a certain age, and heinous crimes against homosexuals. Just because of the former doesn't mean the majority of the population accepts the latter. Crimes against homosexuals like that happen there just as they happen in the US or elsewhere in the world. I think people are thinking the outlook of the society at large combined with those crimes are mutually inclusive. I don't necessarily think they are.

You are judging a country where this is not necessarily the case and where the government is concerned enough to enact laws to maintain innocence until the children are ready to explore things of themselves.

that's not true. Adults who engage in homosexuality are thrown in jail. So there is no 'until children can explore things themselves'. There is a zero tolerance of homosexual behavior in the country.

When I posted about love, I was referring to romantic love, not platonic love which for many people (myself included) required to even have sex or to make love. I cannot sleep with someone of the opposite gender because there are no sexual feelings or romantic feelings.

Then if you claim to be a heterosexual, your relationship too isn't based on love either.

Now if you look it up on Wikipedia, both Homosexuality and Heterosexuality are defined, respectively, as having romantic and sexual feelings for same/opposite genders.
