Seems like anything that used to breathe is being ground up and put into little supermarket meat trays these days.

Roadkill, old nags, dogs, cats, rats...people.

Anyone who has spent any amount of time in Asia, knows that is pretty much the menu.

If it hops, crawls, fly's, slithers, swims or walks, it's on the menu.

As long as it tastes good.

I'm not sure if this is better or worse than the kangaroo meat at jack in the box but it' definitely demonstrates the cultural variation in food choices. I think the local butcher shop is the best choice for meat. They have good prices and you know what your getting (where I live anyway). Like supporting these small businesses.

Donkey meat is a popular snack in some areas of China, although it only accounts for a tiny fraction of overall meat consumption. In 2011 China slaughtered 2.4 million donkeys, according to country’s livestock industry yearbook.
“Isn’t fox meat more expensive than donkey meat anyway?” asked one bemused user on microblogging site Sina Weibo.

Sounds like the donkey meat was merely "tainted". Which means it simply could have been processed in the same facility. Being that it is a major issue and being addressed though, would lead one to conclude China is changing somewhat, since in the past blatant knock off and fake food was a major problem.

The scandal could dent Walmart’s reputation for quality in China’s $1 trillion food and grocery market where it plans to open 110 new stores in the next few years.

As Chinese citizens become more aware of brand value perhaps they will begin demanding certain conditions for their food production.

Now, if only people would start supporting good brands…

Absolutely! You call the red phone and I'll change the little light bar from 5 to 1 for war standing! What a horrible and barbaric thing......to us anyway...

Seriously tho, I'm surprised with the cultural superiority these days? So many almost would seem to say the above and not jokingly. Yet we eat cows and to some? That's more than rude. Much more. We eat pigs... (tho China eats far more of them) and we all know how one culture views those critters for consumption. There is a lot I learned about in Anthropology that others love eating...I don't know quite how I'd avoid offending hosts if offered .. tho I'd never look down on them for peculiar menus. After all, so are ours, to someone, eh?

I must admit, I've never before in my life heard of people eating donkey meat, let alone it being available in main supermarkets? Can I ask if this is just America?
I'm actually a little shocked, but I suppose all cultures are different, and eat different I suppose. Wal-Mart owns our Asda right? Oh blimey.

This isn't North America, nor is it Europe, its some weird backwards country that has the walmart chains.

And if they have been sneaking meat in and calling it beef/chicken, etc. THEN ITS TIME TO NARD THEM AGAIN. THE NUMBER OF TIMES I BLAST WITH MY CONSCIOUSNESS AND SEND THEM SAILING OUT OF THE COSMOS I'M SURPRISED THEY WAKE UP ABLE TO WALK STRAIGHT!@!!!!

I reckon that having a bit of fox meat in their donkey products is the least of their worries over in China at the moment, don't you?

Here in Spain we're famous for our animal abuse...bull fights, throwing goats from bell towers. lancing bulls, hanging whippets etc etc etc, but...we dont eat donkey..yet...

Traditionally Chinese eat everything that moves, from crawling creatures up to multiple legged insects, four legged creatures and who knows.. Perhaps soon to be announced two legged as well.

Moral value determines what you are going to consume as food that values will perish when hungry! It is totally wrong to seek a marked for that kind of mixture in western countries but then again would you buy GM meat or Wal-Mart mixture?

I don't think I will be asking the woman working in Wal-Mart where I can find a piece of .......

Could get slapped.

I stopped buying meat at Wal-Mart a LONG time ago.

You want good meat- go to a real grocery store.

This is pretty sick, more reasons not to buy meat at Wal-Mart.

(And yes I know this is in China) - but you should still not buy meat from that place- ever.

Seriously, I like going to my local butchers, for the ATS members here who live up in Skagit (North of Seattle) ,Sylvana Meats in Arlington, WA. some fine T-bones and other yummy stuff, no Donkey's that's for sure!

I ate donkey meat when I spent some time in Beijing, it was one of the nicer exotic meats I tried. I actually found myself craving it when I continued my travels into northern Vietnam. I can see how you would be annoyed at such a delicious thing being tainted with fox meat.
