“Strange Days” 1995

This post is about a simple observation from an old movie that was way ahead of its time. A good movie for sure check it out!

At 6min and 11 sec into the film the character is selecting a station and the Radio host states

... it's a little after 2 am on
December 30th, 1999... the second to
last day of the whole darn century,
and the phone lines are open. Dan
from Silverlake, you're on the air.
Shorty after that the host asks....

So Dan, are you looking forward to
the New Year?

DAN
Not really. I mean what's the
point? Nothing changes New Years
day. The economy sucks, gas is over
three bucks a gallon, *fifth grade
kids are shooting each other at
recess ... the whole thing sucks,
right? So what the hell are we
celebrating?

Keep in mind this film is from 1995 and it depicts December 30th, 1999 in this part of the movie.

It is important to know that the price of gas in 1995 was no were near 3 bucks a gallon.
The price of gas in the year 1995 on average was about $1.07 per gallon.
In fact it's not even close to that much on December 30th 1999,costing about $1.27 a gallon.

So far its violent. But fits the new. Looks like bradly cooper stole the Ralph Fiens ( Voldermort ) look. Interesting concept of taking peoples brain waves ( which is in development ) and recording what they see through their eyes and selling it on the black market

I believe Christopher Walken did a movie like this. In walken's version it showed the brief travel to the afterlife. It was called BRAINSTORM. I recommend that one too.

James Cameron was one of the writers for that film, i remember going to see it..
What i noticed about it was how he stole the idea from this movie. (he also used the music for the intro of "The Abyss" JC most underrated movie)

Now that is a good movie.

Hmm. More than theta alpha brain waves.....lots of background hints of downfall of USA and China rises. And police state in your face. So far very good movie.

Great movie! Spoiler alert.

Yes police state with recon into your own mind....but the ending there is hope and good. Lots of confetti! Angela Bassett is awesome. Ralph Fiennes wears that hair do better than Bradley Cooper.

A must watch for doom porners. It shows James Cameron's mind set . And reasoning to move to the far south east pacific. And building a sub to escape into the Mariana Trench..

First please note this film sort of suddenly throws quite harrowing depictions of assaults on women at you, which some people, in particular women who have experienced similar assaults, who I know have expressed shock and anger at encountering in it, so anyone curious about it might wish to know that before diving in.

Also, Juliette Lewis is a terrible singer, and there should be some kind of warning about that. I am not trying to compare the two. I'm just saying, if I had to decide between, I'd probably cut the scenes with her singing. At least the rapes are relevant to the story.

The rest of this post assumes that the reader has seen the movie or doesn't care about "spoilers".

Strange Days was directed by Katherine Bigelow, now divorced from James Cameron, first woman to be awarded Best Director in the Oscars for the military-propaganda film The Hurt Locker. Certainly a reasonable candidate for a potentially encoded film.

But going over it now, as far as I can reckon, it just isn't one. "Gas prices might go up a lot" was something everyone was worried about in 1995. The idea of kids shooting each other has always been invoked as a symbol of anomie. And the American economy has been doing well for about twenty years out of two hundred, and they weren't even all at once, but split in half. Two decades of things seeming great and we develop amnesia, I swan. All this stuff has been playing on an infinite loop for 30 years. You'd be amazed how little is new about the news.

This film is very topical to the time it was made. Yet it makes a lot of specific predictions which aren't even close. The chaotic dystopia it presents is far, far from where we're at. There is no black market in any kind of mind-sharing devices or even any new drug that induces such experiences. And it turns out people actually care LESS about open police brutality these days, to the point where if the LAPD just up and murders an innocent man on live TV, let alone on a week-old recording, it's pretty much business as usual when the entertainment helicopters clear away.

If anything is remarkable about the film it's how much it managed to get wrong about the future despite getting all too much correct in another sense.

Yes you are right. This film is violent towards women...you're wrong. Juliet Lewis is not a bad singer...she is in fact a terrible actress. But Angela Bassett is a good actress. And kicks the butts of 2 bad cops. As far as LAPD. Its more a slap in the face for over stepping their boundaries in police brutality against minorities. Heck we still saw their use of fire in the mountain cabins against a rouge cop recently. They even brought in drones. Then gave the order to torch it.

No..prophecy shows none of that is happening...the use of mind recording is is an example of another very addicting drug. Just another point of what could happen or contribution to the downfall of western civilization.

I was trying to not give the movie away for those who might want to see. No one has to agree..its still a movie.


EDIT: also the use of Micheal Wincott in a warehouse club is an extension of his character in the crow..



Edit: if everyone were forced to wear such a device...such as the victim of a crime and the perpetrator....as terrible as it is.( the crime ). Then its DIRECT evidence of the crime committed . There would be no need for a long drawn out trial. Go to jail now!

Someone has to stand up for Juliette Lewis. A horrible singer, well, maybe, but a very good actress when she hits it. "Natural Born Killers" was probably her masterpiece, and if you haven't seen it yet do so with your "violence is okay to watch" glasses on.

I liked "Strange Days", as the concept of sensory living someone's else's memories opens up new entertainment, investment, periodic recycling of your own traumatic moments, and much more.
